I don't have fish yet for it but I cleaned a smaller amount of sand in the sink in a clear bowl until it was almost clear by just turning/folding the sand in running water. The bag has directions to cut both corners and insert a hose so it can be cleaned that way but that would be really heavy.

Really like this sustrate took forever to wash and after 6 riseing still clouded up the tank so bad I couldn't but after I rised the filter a couple times it cleared up by the next morning. What I really like about it is I've been doing pH up for 3 days and saw no change the alkaline was dangerously low. And after I put the substrate in both raised to a heathly level and the pH when up from a light orange to a dark redish orange so now once the tank sets another day I can finally add chiclets like ive been looking forward to doing.

I received my sand today - took 1/4 of the bag- put it in a pail and flushed it with the sprinkler on the hose. Just let the bucket fill up and drain itself - moving the sand around the bottom of the pail as the water rushes through and within a few minutes it was clean and the water ran clean. It is very dirty and cloudy when you first start the wash. BUT the beautiful sand your left with is well worth it. It is just gorgeous and will be the base in my globe air fern terrariums. To me this unusual sand is well worth the cost and the effort to clean it up for use. Great buy, and it came faster then expected.
