Best brand out there

In all honesty, this has been the most noticeably best dog food brand that I have ever given my 7 year old lab/pit mix; and I know that sentence doesn't make much sense but it will soon:

My dog had ruptured her ACL tendant when she was 3.5 years old. Since surgery made that leg weaker, stiff, and uncomfortable for her to put all of her weight back on it again, the vet warned me that this was putting her other leg at risk for the same (EXPENSIVE) injury if she didn't stop favoring her other leg while standing.

A week after I changed Edith's good from a big expensive blue brand to Wellness started showing incredible results that even protein supplements I've tried in the past couldn't produce! Her bad leg is no longer "˜bad' and painful for her anymore- her little limp sometimes comes back only when it's very cold outside, her coat looks great, and she actually likes Wellness..I had to beg her to eat the other brand she was on prior to Wellness, she had a little limp all the time and was straining her back bc it was painful to put wait on her bad leg...Edith ate only that other brand for ab 2-3 years and it was more expensive than Wellness is- I wish I trusted this brand sooner, and you will be glad you decided to as well. I more than pinky promise you this :)
Beware - Wellness is not the same anymore

I used Wellness whitefish and sweet potato for 6 years. We have a lab that gets ear infections and need a grain free, limited ingredient diet. Wellness was the perfect solution for 6 years.

Roughly 9 months to a year ago, they changed their paired treat recipe for this line. In addition to the biscuits being hard as a rock, they gave rise to ear infections in the dog. Thus, the recipe was changed, no warning (or even acknowledgement) given. I eliminated the treats and the straight food worked once again. However, I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop with the kibble.

The other shoe dropped recently. Using an order purchased from Amazon, our dog suddenly began refusing this food. A similar response as to when they changed the biscuit recipe. I can only surmise they changed the kibble recipe now as well, likely to some lower grade formulation. Don't kid yourself: this is not the Wellness dog food of 5 years ago. It is not worth the price tag anymore as there are better foods available for this amount of $$ now.

I was especially disappointed with customer service at Wellness. I complained twice and got little more than an acknowledgement of my complaint that they would in turn "share". A loyal 6 year customer turned away to a competitor...not good. The Wellness brand is clearly going the wrong direction, and didn't seem to care a lick. Buyer beware.
Larger kibble great for larger dogs

I only give my Golden Retriever quality food, made in the USA. The worst & most expensive food was the one his vet put him on. He has itchy skin so I tried other brands of fish/salmon dog food, the food smelled awful and his farts worse. I have not seen a down side to this food. The up side is the large size of the kibble. Other dog foods have small kibble and my dog inhales that food. This one he actually has to slow down and chew it. He likes the taste, but he is not picky and eats anything. He is a golden, he is excited and happy---Oh boy!!! Dog Food!!!!!
I wish the reviews were by flavors. I only want to know about the large breed one.

Wellness pet food is the finest quality pet food available, in my opinion, and I am a long time holistic veterinarian who uses it for my own pet, and for other pets in the past. Wellness foods are wheat, corn, soy, additive and preservative free. They are ideal holistic nutrition for healthy pets as well as pets needing a restricted diet for food sensitivities of any kind, and never include potentially problematic ingredients. This is the case with my beloved rescue dog who as a puppy had to have such a specific restricted healthy diet that if she ate anything else she would be vomiting and having diarrhea for a week, needing fluid therapy. As much as I didn't like it, she had to be on constant medications and probiotics for her first couple years of life, before finally being healthy enough to be tapered off of these.. She initially was saved as a puppy from these repeated bouts of illness by Iams Prime Naturals and then Iams Sensitive Naturals, but when these became hard to find, after extensive research into nutrition and the available options, I found Wellness, and that has been what has kept her healthy and happy ever since. I liked the quality and standards of ingredients so much that I switched all my other pets including cats to Wellness as well.

Wellness does offer grain free versions also, but in my opinion and that of most veterinarians, grain free foods for pets are a fad with no real nutritional or biological basis, anymore than the fad in people. Dogs and cats are not wild animals and even cats are not obligate carnivores who eat no other types of foods besides meats. There is simply no scientific basis for this unfortunate fad, and I don't believe these foods are as well balanced as the original formulations of a high quality top of the line holistic food like Wellness, which is tested and certified at every step of development and production for the health and well-being of the pets who will be fed this food. Sure, cheap pet food with corn and chicken by products are not healthy by any stretch of the imagination, but easily digested carbohydrates from healthy sources like barley and rice, and sometimes potato, are important for a well balanced diet for our pets and for the digestion and assimilation of all the good healthy nutrients in high quality foods like Wellness.

I will mention one more thing - even though there is a "small breed" version of this food, and I have a 20 lb dog, I feed her the regular size kibble because the pieces of the "small breed" are so small they are smaller than most cat food kibble. Larger pieces involve some chewing which is essential for dental health. Very few dogs would be small enough to need kibble that size. I personally buy it to use as treats for my dog because it is easy to use and she loves it, and it is very hard to find treats that meet the strict standards of quality needed to keep her healthy. Also, she has a treat-dispensing ball toy which can be set to a smaller opening for smaller pieces, and the "small breed" kibble fits perfectly into that toy for maximum enjoyment.

In summary, I can say that I as a holistic veterinarian prefer Wellness food to even proprietary foods sold only by veterinarians. I think the quality and the standards of their ingredients cannot be matched by any other food. I will always feed it to my dog,(but the regular kibble for her regular meals, not the "small breed"), for the rest of her life, and also to any other pets I acquire. And it's good to have the "small breed" tiny kibble available to use for treats and her toys. Holistic nutrition when it leads to healthy high quality food such as this cannot be beat. Cannot highly recommend enough!!
cured my dog of skin/coat problems

My dog was a stray and he has allergies. The vet associated to a suspected soy/grain diet and to vitamin deficiency with his previous situation.

This product cured him of his dry itchy flaky skin and stringy coat. His hair color was light when I found him (I named him Goldie) and now it's dark dark brown - a sign of improvement in his health! Also, he's not keeping me up at night scratching himself to death. Everyone comments how soft and fluffy he is now. I don't feed him anything else but this. He doesn't need additional supplements at all now.

Wellness is more expensive than the conventional brand but it's for a good reason. I recommend this to all dog owners to try if they have similar issues with their dog's skin/coat.
