You might have to repair it before you can use it !!!
Think7•April 15, 2018
I got it to work after replacing the spring on the ratcheting brake. Mine was likely a customer return since it arrived in a re-taped box with the cable loosely wound so as to trap the cable on itself and wound backwards which is really hard to believe. Since I was out of time I couldn't wait for a replacement so was forced to make it work. Nothing more annoying than paying for something advertised as new, that turns out not to be new and then having to spend your time fixing it to make it work. Avoid. Spend another $10+ and buy something better.
Using it in my Christmas display - works great

Does what its supposed to. You can set it to lock to safely unwind or wind up, or you can set it to free spool. I am not using it to anywhere near its rated capacity so I cannot speak to its actual lifting or pulling ability. But, for my purposes (see photos below) of lifting 33 feet of Really Big Christmas Lights, it makes light work of what we used to stretch out by hand!,
It works

How I used this product probly isn't recommended at all but that's not the sellers fault. It does a great job pulling heavy items. The steel cable gets stuck very frequently. I'd recommend maybe another item with easier cranking ability.

used it only three times on very light items, and it broke on the third. Small drive gear exploded on a 186# pig that was lifted in the air for butchering. Don't wast your money!
Cheap Gear Broke on Two of Them
K9 Owner•October 22, 2016
I was only using it to hold and hoist a deer feeder that had about 25 pounds of corn. The small gear broke quickly. Amazon sent a replacement. That one broke under the same conditions about six months later. If it just had a better quality gear it would be fine.
