Pretty good kit
kleelkJuly 17, 2017
Pretty good kit. This appears to be a really old Monogram kit. Biggest disappointment was that the decals and painting instructions were for Korean war era squadrons (one of which is in fact the "Black Sheep.") I suppose a determined modeler could do the research and acquire the markings for "Pappy's" plane from WW2 though. It also includes the wing-mounted "ra-dome," but that part is ignored in the instructions. The foldable wings were somewhat difficult to get in place, but I got it done. I don't plan to ever fold them. I didn't bother with the retractable landing gear and just glued it in place. Apparently monogram had a series of WW2 naval aircraft in the 60s that featured many working parts. They looked good in theory, but in reality they didn't work that well. Not a bad kit, especially considering the price, if you plan to leave it static on display.

I had a problem with the folding wings, the fit wasn't as well as the rest of the parts.I ended up with fixed wings.
It CAN be made to look good by someone with time, patience, and above all SKILL.

I had to spend to much time fixing gaps and seems that were far to large for the manufacturer not to know about and that should have been taken care of in the production end of things. Overall a lot of potential got wasted because Revell cheeped out. Not a good choice for a novice or casual builder.
NOT the Monogram Corsair

OK, beware that this is NOT the same model that used to be packaged under the old Monogram label. It assembles the same and looks the same, but there have been some cost cutting changes made that effect the quality of the model. As a teenager back in the seventies, I built a couple of these and while they were not perfect, they assembled fairly well and the working features WORKED. The mold marks inside the fuselage still are stamped "Monogram 1963", but there are differences. The new kits are made in China now. The plastic is MUCH thinner and softer. The critical hinge pins for the folding wings are too weak now to properly support the outer wing. I wound up just gluing mine in the down position. I've lost some of the raised panel line detail while sanding the resulting seam. The landing gear struts are thinner than I remember. The tailwheel does not lock in the down position (see the box art and you'll notice that they couldn't keep it down long enough for the photo). On the plus side, it still looks like a Corsair once it is assembled. It's old school cool - too bad they had to mess with the parts that made it work as advertised.

I was unable to get the wings to fold and in some places the molds were warped and hard to fit together. Once the plane was painted it looked pretty good. However, the decals can not be applied as in the directions. I had to take some liberties in order to make them work. While I'm not impressed with the quality of the product, it came out ok overall.
