A flimsy steamer at a premium price
Bocaboy✓ Verified Purchase•January 17, 2018
To be fair about the Helen Chen Asian Bamboo Steamer, it does work. The problem I have with it is how flimsy it is. The first one arrived broken, with one of the outside retaining rings sticking through the plastic wrapping. As expected, Amazon promptly replaced the item. When the new one arrived, I was very surprised to find that the top of the steamer was concave, not convex as shown in the picture. A concave top makes no sense since it prohibits almost anything from being placed in the steamer rack below it. It took me awhile to get the courage to push the bottom of the top upwards so it matched the picture. I own no other cooking tool that I had to reshape it prior to using it.
As soon as I cooked my first meal, the "spokes" from the center of the top started to buckle and disconnect from the edge. They need to be pushed back into place and I can see that this will be an on-going problem.
For the price, I'd look around and consider another brand. There is clearly something wrong with the quality control people at Helen Chen. I'm very sorry I purchased this product. If all bamboo steamers are flimsy, I may as well not have spent the extra dollars on something I thought was a quality product.

Very Nice Quality Steamer I Like It !

I used this the day it arrived to cook pork dumplings. It was fantastic!. I used it 2 days later for shrimp pot stickers and another pork dish. Great again ! I used it a couple days later for carrots and potatoes. Again they were great. Steaming is so much healthier. This steamer is of good quality and I expect to use it weekly. It was not a New Years Resolution, but a desire to eat healthier. I have also done shrimp with Old Bay Seasoning. Oh yes, I almost forgot.... Buy a package of frozen banana leaves to line your steamer so the food doesn't stick to the bamboo. I paid $2 for enough leaves to cook 2 dozen times with and they keep in the freezer. You can use other things too. Excellent item!

Helen Chen's Asian Kitchen 10in Bamboo Steamer

Received Helen Chen bamboo steamer very quickly. It appears to be crafted well. I put it into a pan of simmering water-it just fit, so no steam coming up the outside. I put salt in the water and sprinkled salt on the insides of the baskets. I put in a bit of ginger root and scallion, and found the steam came up quickly and did not leak from the woven top or the sides. A grassy odor was noticeable as I let the baskets steam, and the basin water became yellow from the steamed out grass sap, I'm guessing. Bamboo is a grass. I dumped out the water, and switched the baskets with another round of salt and steam. Less odor, less coloring of the basin water. Removed the baskets and separated to cool slightly. Then I carefully brushed olive oil on all the surfaces, inside, out, top bottom, sides. It soaked in pretty quickly. I wiped off any excess, and restacked. I think I will steam again without food to be sure the steam water is clear. As for the steam, it was gratifying to see a good steamy environment inside both tiers, and none obviously escaping the joins or the lid. I intend to use a cabbage leaf as lining as parchment paper has its own chemical problems. I'm planning to make steamed dumplings, and veggies. I may try tamales, too! The 10 inch is rather larger than I expected. It will more than suffice for 2 people.
