Running nearly 5 years and still going.
Margaret M.✓ Verified Purchase•August 21, 2023
I purchased two of these cubes back in 2012 and have been actively keeping Betta fish in them for nearly 5 years now. 1 of the tanks started losing power about 2 years ago. The filter was no longer as powerful as it once was, and the LED light on top grew dim and eventually died. The other one that I purchased at the same time is still running, even as I type this. I am only now looking to replace it. They lasted me a good many years, though they aren't without flaws.
The filters are not very strong, which could be seen as good or bad. The water output seemed to be perfect for a Betta, not too much current, but kept the water clean. However, a strange, oily film has always appeared on the water's surface. To this day, I still have no idea what causes it, but apart from it being slightly gross, it has never done any harm to my fish. It's just there. I've never seen it in any other fish tank I've maintained, only in these cubes, no matter what kind of water I've used.
The tank is plastic, and it does scratch, which makes removing calcium deposits from the sides of the tank very difficult, and the clear plastic has become slightly cloudy over the years, but nothing too terrible. The LED lamp does appear to dim over the course of several years, but I've successfully kept live plants in good health with only the use of those LEDs.
My biggest complaint would have to be that the light and the filter are all wired together, using the same plug, and therefore, the filter cannot be separated from the unit. I have wanted to replace these filters, but can't. I would have to cut the wire to detach it. The filters are just plain annoying. Sometimes they are very loud for such a little filter, they get gunked up fast, and water output becomes close to nothing. The suction cups that hold the filter in place to the side of the tank don't last long. After running for about a year, the suction cups became almost useless and the filter would randomly drop off the side and into the tank, scaring the crap out of my fish. Once it started doing this, it never stopped. Every other day I would have to pull the filter out of the water and smash it back onto the side, hoping it would stay.
Overall, these tanks lasted me longer than I thought they would. They are the perfect little desk aquarium, and they've kept my Bettas happy and healthy for years.

Great as a starter fish tank

I've never owned any fish in my life because I am always concerned about the amount of work I need to do to maintain a tank. When I finally decided that I wanted a fish, I researched and found that betta fish can be a great starter fish because it requires least efforts. So I got this 1.5 gallon tank, which, according to most online reviews, is the minimum size requirement for a betta. I was a little worried because it only got 3.5 stars, but I think it has all the components that I need: filter, LED light, flat tank surface (for minimum view distortion) and style. I am so glad I got this.
It's been a month and my betta is very happy in it, which in turn has made me really happy. I bought so many accessories (gravel, decorations, exercise equipment, assorted food varieties, toys, heater, live plants, thermometer, etc.) since I got my betta (so much for the minimum efforts LOL). I can see myself upgrade this 1.5 gallon tank to a 3 gallon tank in a couple of months and will get an even bigger one after I get more used to the cleaning and water changing routine.
The only two negative things I can come up with regarding this tank is that the acrylic surface is easily scratched and the filter is a little strong for this small tank. But both of them can be remedied. To avoid scratches, you need to be careful not to clean the tank with abrasive sponges. I scratched my tank a little because when I gave the tank a sponge bath, didn't notice a small gravel was caught in between my sponge and the tank surface and I ended up creating a long scratches along the front (but it's ok. I am going to upgrade to a 3 gallon one soon). To reduce the strong current produced from the filter, I can always purchase another filter (there are plenty of recommendations of filter for small tanks on Amazon).
I highly recommend this tank!

A great starter kit (color black)

I started housing my betta fish in this tank. Since then, I've upgraded my bettas to 2.5 gallon tanks.
The kit includes an in-tank filter, one filter cartridge, an electric adapter, LED lights, and no plastic plants (even though Amazon's description says that it includes plants). As you can see in older reviews and uploaded pictures, the older model did include plants and had storage compartment at the bottom, but the newer model that Amazon's selling does not have these.
Also, it doesn't come with water conditioner, gravel, or food.
You can adjust the LED light crane up or down to illuminate the tank however you want. But don't adjust the crane's height too often as you'll wear out the hinges to keep it at a certain position and over time, the light crane will automatically slide down.
The filter keeps the water cleaner so you don't have to change the water as often since experts recommend changing water at least once a week for a one-gallon tank for bettas. It can be easily attached anywhere on the tank by the two suction cups on its back. For aesthetic purposes, I'd recommend placing it on the back wall of the tank along with the crane.
The top clear lid of the tank reduce water evaporation and has a large hole for easy feeding and handling.
This tank is big enough to add a small heater along with your filter if you'd like. The filter does take up quite some space in the tank, so adding a heater makes your tank looks a little more crowded, but it's good for your betta since normal room temperature is around 72 degrees F, which is a little cold for tropical fish like bettas.
The filter creates a fairly strong current which bettas don't like since they prefer still water, but you can reduce the current by raising the filter a little above the water level or add more plants and decoration in the tank.
Overall, it was a great starter-kit tank for small fish and bettas, and for $20 you wouldn't find a better bang for your buck. However, you should consider the costs of replacing the filter cartriges. Amazon also sells Tetra's filter cartridges with each costing around $3. You need to replace the cartridge for this tank at least once a month, depending how often you change the water during that month. Changing water often prolongs the lifetime of filter cartridge.
Again, consider that additional costs. Hope this helps.

Great Little Tank for the Price

I have a number of Fluval glass tanks (Spec and Edges), and bought this as an isolation tank. I dropped in cuttings of a few low light plants, and just let it run. I seeded it with water from my existing tanks. It cycled quickly with that, and has turned into a nice looking little tank. I am really surprised. I added a small Tetra Aquarium heater Tetra , and most of it and the filter is hidden by plants and a rock. A small nano thermometer completes the set.
I wish, I could add a picture.
This is very suitable for small fish or a betta (it's current inhabitant). The filter is low flow only. As with all aquaria, feed sparingly - I only feed every 2-3 days, and only enough for them to feed 5 min. I also do a 30%-50% water change once a week.
Caveats: this made of thin, styrene plastic, not a thick acrylic or glass. However, it is quite white and clear. It needs to be treated with care. Do not use a strong, abrasive algae cleaner (magnet), and do not clean with dry paper towels. I usually proactively manage algae by keeping clean water, and will use my hand to wipe any surface bacteria, while the tank is low after siphoning. I clean the outside with a damp cotton towel. I clean the cover under the faucet, and wipe dry also using damp towel. If you wipe dry dust with a towel, or worse, paper towel, the clear top will scratch. With this treatment, I have had the tank for three months, and it looks pristine and like new.
The light is strong enough for a few, low light plants.
I thought, it would end up in the back room, but I now keep it in my office in plain view...

Pump stopped working after 1 year
Erica✓ Verified Purchase•August 4, 2023
We had this tank for almost 1 year. The pump stopped working and I attempted to clear the pump. I purchased a new tetra pump then realized the pump for this tank is hardwired. I wish there was a way to replace the pump without having to trash the entire tank as it is wasteful.
