I was quite disappointed when I received this product. Shipping speed and packaging, as always, was great. the product itself was quite a mess. The original product wrapping was ripped and taped together, which immediately raised a red flag. Like others stated, the finish is very rough, but that wasn't a major concern for me. The issues I ran into was that there was a relatively large knot at the edge of the base of the Mortar. This made it quite unstable. A few strokes of the pestle showed why it was a prior return, the thing rocked from side to side; that alone it made it unusable. The other concern was that the species of wood that they used to manufacture this product was quite soft. it was easily scratched with a thumbnail, which would be way too soft to ground hard spices in. This was the first time I returned a product to Amazon within 10 minutes of opening the box.
I prefer wood and I did give my children one ...

I prefer wood and I did give my children one also. Wood has the tendency to observe the oils of the herbs and spices which I did learn to appreciate.
not best choice for my cook

I never see him using this. I had a wooden one years ago and used it a lot. I think it's just not suited to his cooking style. But it is smooth and good quality. There is really nothing wrong with it.
