Bought this for my 12 year old daughter on a whim and she loves this thing. Has been wound up countless times and it's still going strong. We also discovered that the plastic parts on the inside glow in the dark! I wouldn't expect this toy to last long if purchased for a young child because the parts don't look like they would stand up to much abuse, hair and fibers can easily get wrapped around the inner parts. Really cool novelty gift, I would definitely buy other wind up toys from this company.

Run it on a clean hard surface. The first time I put it on carpet, a strand of hair got caught up in the gears. Once removed it was fine. Makes a great stocking stuffer.

I love these toys, but more importantly, my dad loves them!
I got this one for his birthday because it was one missing from his collection. Out of the 8 toys he has this is ranked lower than the rest because of the pull string. It's easier for the grandkids to use, but the string sometimes slips out of its little hoop and gets tangled.
I would still highly recommend these toys, but this one has a greater likelihood of malfunction and damage.

The best gift for kids! This toy is durable, sparky and fun for both kids and adults. I keep a couple of these on hand to use as last minute gifts and they are always popular. I highly recommend this and the other kikkerland wind up toys. These ones that spark are really fun though.
Durable little designs that inspire questions

Our boys saw these at a local kid's science museum, and they loved them. They don't get constant play, but both boys (8 and 13) had long talks about how each one moved and why. Every one of these has a different mechanism and method of locomotion, so they're fantastic for getting kids to think about those things. One looked at them in terms of robotics, and the other compared them to insects, topics both of them had recently been studying.
The toys look delicate, but for the most part, they are made with heavy gauge wire and stronger windup boxes than most toys. Our younger son literally ripped the box apart and sent his flying, but we couldn't see any damage, and it has worked fine for several months. Smart, rugged, bizarre designs are awesome for kids. Highly recommended!
