Oh wow! These are the best and we have 3 of these in the freezer right now. Well worth the cost. There are a few important tips for use though. It's important to not overfill the ice, or it's a beast to crack out and you could flex your top piece and ruin the handle. I've found an effective solution for daily use of these items is to fill full, but not to the ridge, and then once frozen, turn ice tray upside down under cold water for 10 seconds before trying to crack the handle. Regardless of what you've read in reviews, trust me, most people simply don't know how to use these traditional items correctly if they complain about durability and what not. If you're wise enough to run water on the bottom side prior to handle cracking, the handle is totally sufficient to crack the ice. Bending of metal is typically a symptom of the ice sticking to tray, not the resistance factor to the normally sized cubes themselves. Since we've given these a quickie rinse upside down before cracking, we've never had a problem with the handles. Depending on your mineral content of your water, you may need to scrub with wire brush or rest in vinegar once a year to recover that perfect metal appearance. These things are awesome and we choose them because we're firmly committed to never drinking waters which have sat in plastic. We fill ours with Berkey water, and are so happy we have these metal trays. I looked at plastic ice trays and ice cubes which came out of the plastic trays with a microscope once. Did you know that with each and every crack out of plastic, you get micro particulates of plastic in your ice? Yes it's true, and there is no substitute for clean water, stainless steel ice cube trays are real winners. Plastic items are for people who don't mind cancer, bio toxicity, leukemia, endocrine disruption, that sort of stuff. Are you a health conscious consumer? If so, you must reject all plastic containers, and get with metals and ceramics. We also bought the stainless steel popsicle holders and stainless steel to go drinking cups. Seriously, it's great to get away from plastics. This is our new ice cube tray for life and we've given a few of them away as xmas presents, purchased through various amazon accounts. Would really like to see these retail, since I'm trying to get away from online purchasing these days. But hey, if the retail giants want to force consumers into plastic, they can expect my continued absence. We're not interested in bottom dollar, we're interested in durability and health. These trays can last a lifetime if treated properly. Sometimes I half fill them for nifty whiskey cubes, just right and small. You can smash the tray down hard on a wood board while frozen before cracking, overfilled, if you want ice shards and chunks. These trays are a winner. Recommended.

In the 50s all we had was aluminum ice trays. Even kids could use them and I was four the first time I remember standing on a stool at the counter and opening a tray in our what came to be known as mid century modern house in suburban Washington DC. They are easy to use you just have to know a few tricks. Put the tray on the counter to defrost for a few minutes while you are busy with other things and it will open easily. In these days of instant everything this ice tray may not be for you if you want it to work instantly. You can also turn it upside down and run it under hot water for a few seconds if you really can't wait five minutes for it to sit on the counter. I have peace of mind using this tray because it is stainless steel. What we who grew up in the 50s all learned later in life about aluminum not being too good for our health means I welcome the stainless steel version despite its dizzyingly high price. I bought mine to freeze coffee as our fridge produces regular ice so I don't need it for that. If you are an iced coffee fan you'll find that one tray makes two glasses worth of cubes with room for half and half or whatever you use. Because I'm the only iced coffee drinker in my household, I use one glass worth of cubes from the tray and freeze the second glass worth for the next day. Then the tray is free to refill with more coffee (which I presweeten before I freeze). Of course you could just bag the cubes and drop a few of them into a glass of chilled coffee to make the cubes last longer and I do that sometimes too. But with the all cube method, since your iced drink is made with frozen coffee cubes instead of frozen water cubes it doesn't dilute as it melts. Delish.

The media could not be loaded. The ice maker died on our fridge so we decided to get trays instead of spending hundreds to fix it. I went thru several plastic and silicone trays but they would crack or ice would get stuck plus I like to stay away from plastic as much as possible.
My parents used to have these and they last forever. I've had mine for 5 years and it hasn't bent or rusted even with daily use. I added a video review, I do find it hard to get ice out but I would still not go back to plastic again and I would buy again.

I discovered that my old blue plastic ice cube trays were literally poisoning me. I read about the stainless steel ice cube trays and knew that I needed to change to the Onyx stainless steel for my health. We filter are water anyway, and after using the stainless steel Onyx ice cube trays, the ice cubes were almost clear, and all drinks taste 100% better. I thought the trays were stackable, they are not, the only drawback, but my health is more important. If my post helps one person throw away their plastic ice cube trays, then it is worth it, as I usually do not comment on my purchases.
