Easy set up, versatile application

So far so good on night and day one. Good flow and tank cleared up quickly after set up so it must be doing something. It might even be too much flow and plan on experimenting to make the outflow gentler. Set up took a long time because you have to read everything and practice with it all if you've never had this model before, but was easy. The cd that comes with it is neat. I put it in my computer and had it read it to me while I followed along in the manual. No difficulties or initial mistakes on first set up, pretty user friendly because things only go together one way eliminating questioning weather it's right before you prime turn it on. It didn't prime as easily as it showed in videos. It's like doing CPR on a tiny button with your thumbs for a few minutes but eventually it filled up. It may be because I still have some extra length of hose that I'm just not ready to cut yet until I've done the maintainence a few times. Im working in a tight space and I'm using this on a custom 24" globe 30 gallon polycarbonate goldfish bowl I made. I had planned on having to DIY some things to make it fit and work right but didn't have to at all! The clips that hold the intake and outtake fixtures to the tank did just what I needed them to even though the tank isn't straight sides. I didn't really even need the suction cups to make it stay but I put them on to avoid scratches. The intake and out take swivel in every direction so the base of them doesn't need to be straight up and down to get the angle right for flow. The swivel of the out take alowed it to curve and set better closer to the back of the bowl which I wasn't expecting but looks much better and less noticible and my goldfish has more room to swim! The telescoping feature to lengthen the intake pipe was very convenient. I also used the out flow extender pipe on the intake pipe to make it two inches longer to get the three inches off the sand that I wanted. The carbon cartridge opens and you can put other stuff in it if you want, I took half of it out and put nitrate reducing cubes in it that last about as long as the carbon so I can just dump it all when it's time and mixed my old filters bio media in with the new bio media. Had enough new bio media left over for when it comes time to change one basket out in about 6 mo. Using the spray bars currently because I wanted to see if they could fit through the 9" opening in the top and they do because they flex and swivel at the base and can be adjusted outward after you get it in. Plan on changing to the other outflow option later today and see how the flow differs.. I'm not really sure what the intended application is for spray bar vs the other option that comes with it. And would appreciate input if anyone knows exactly. I needed something compact and attractive with easy quick mechanical/chemical maintenance and this seems to fit the bill. As soon as I set up the monitor the conductivity warning came on. I'm hoping it's because messing with the tank stirred up a lot of particulates and will go down after it runs a while and after I clean the first filter a few times. I read that safe TDS which seems to be the same as conductivity, is 300 to 700 ppm, ideally 500ppm for koi, but I haven't found much on what's appropriate for my oranda, and would appreciate input if anyone knows. I'm assuming the only way to control conductivity is water changes and filtering right?? I have about 14-16" clearance under my tank and it's exactly enough to be able to pop the cartridges up and out to clean them I wouldn't go with any less space if you don't want to have to lift the whole thing out to clean although it really isn't all that heavy when it's full. I have a piece of molding across the front of mine that alows me to lift it a little higher behind it and then slightly angle the cartridge to get it out, I wouldn't go with any less space than that. So far I'm feeling I made the only good choice for my application will update if it turns into a disaster.

I bought this long ago and had used like a month.

and kept it in the closet for an year.

now I needed it so I took it out and try to run it.

It leaks when I tilt it.

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with it. but there's nothing wrong with it. no crack no bent at all.

Never buy anything from Hagen Fluval again.

Very upsetting with the horrible engineering.

===================

Updating, 1 to 5 stars.

It was my fault leaking when I tilt it.
When I setup the filter some water goes into the holes at the top of the bottom container where the nobs goes in and tighten the head.
So that water leak out when I tilt. so if you see water coming out when you tilt it, just let it out until it stops.

And another issue was water flow gotten slow down.
I cleaned hose with brush and it flows 100% well.

Nice product to have.
Ok. For the money? Not really

I bought one off warehouse deals and had to return it because it didn't boot but ended up buying a new one somewhere else. The system is pretty awesome. I like the features and the design, but it is tricky to get started. You have to put water in it which the instructions don't say so. Then then after doing some research, the replacement parts for it are ridiculously expensive. The pre filter gets dirty fast and it's not very easy to clean. You basically need a small wire brush to get into the small filter element to clean it. They should make a sponge sleeve for this. I like how you can remove and replace the cartridges easily but the price of these replacement carriages are expensive. Is it worth over $250? Not really.
Terrific Canister Filter - I'd buy it again without hesitation.

I recently upgraded to a 75-Gallon Fresh Water Tank. I keep 89 Discus (only 1 large, most small) and several smaller community fish.

I was at first concerned about the water flow being too much for the fish. Not the case at all. Even the small Cardinal Tetras are just fine. Some people have mentioned adjusting the flow via the lever on the hoses; I have it on full with zero issues.

This thing is SILENT! My wife was standing next to the tank and asked me why I hadn't turned it on! I was using a Fluval 206 in my smaller tank & she was used to that quiet filter, but she had no idea this was running.

I love the fact that I can change the filters without disconnecting the hoses or removing the canister from the cabinet and with no mess. I purchased a second Mechanical Filter and Chemical Canister. This allows me to change the filters very quickly and then clean the Mechanical Filter and refill the Chemical filter at my leisure, knowing the canister is doing its job.

The quality of all the hoses and attachments is beyond anything I've come across. Truly impressive.

My one disappointment was in the Mechanical Filter. I had re-used the gravel from my smaller tank and some other gravel. I forgot to clean it before adding it to the tank, so as you can imagine the tank was very cloudy. The Mechanical Filter that came with the device was never getting the water clear - even after 3 days. My old 206 had the water polishing filtration that cleared the water in no time at all, so I bought the "Fine PreFilter Cartridge" and the water was clear the next day. When I put my fish in the tank the water is so clear they look like they're suspended in air. The only way you know there's water in the tank is by the light shadows through the water ripples at the top. My recommendation is to purchase the Fine PreFilter when you purchase the G6. In fact, I purchased 2, and I purchased another Chemical Filter Canister.

I purchased this 6 weeks ago. So, just after the amazon return policy expired. The pump has stopped working and it is no longer functioning. Needless to say the manufacturers of Fluval, well they're one step above useless. It has taken me 19 emails (thus far) to figure out I need to pay for shipping and send the product back to them... Anyone that has a fishtanks knows you can not have your filter down for the 10-12 weeks it will take them to repair/send a new one. (of which I need to include a pre-paid label to have it returned to me). Save your money, It has some cool features, not anywhere close to the price tag you pay for it. I have received much, much better customer service at Comcast.
