Works well. Messy to service.

This is my first canister filter. Overall, it's a nice upgrade for a hang-on-back unit, allowing for more water flow through my filtration sponges, carbon, etc. and is virtually silent.
Cons: it is almost impossible to open to service without getting water everywhere, and it's difficult to open. This makes monthly carbon filter changes newly annoying, as is taking/putting carbon out or adding temporary media (like Phosguard) for treatments. I miss how easy it was with a hang-on-back system. There should be a way to easily remove the vacuum and handle to lift the top so water doesn't go everywhere!

I got this for use with a RES turtle because of the great reviews. I had a much smaller in tank Fluval canister that was starting to break, but had done a FABULOUS job and cleaning. I figured bigger must be better... not so much, the water ALWAYS appears slightly cloudy with this filter even after cleaning. Just doesn't do as good of a job as the last one. Very disappointing for the price.
Very quiet filter!

This filter is super quiet! I have to put my head next to it to hear it and it is just the sound of water flowing through it that I can hear. I got it specifically for that reason. My HOB filter was so loud. Now I hear the air pump only. So its time to get a quieter air pump next.
Excellent Filter

Set this filter up in my one year old 65 gallon aquarium. Having it run along side Aquaclear 110 until new filter is cycled. Setup was very easy, hardest part is to make sure you cut tubing to the right length. I added more bio media to help create more good bacteria. Filter is extremely quiet. No complains so far. If your looking for a good cannister filter, I recommend the 406.
Excellent filters

Fluval's canister filters are an excellent addition to any aquarium, bought this for my cichlid tank as I read that cichlids are messy. I had bought a FX4 for my tropical aquarium and absolutely love it, so buying another Fluval canister filter was a easy decision. It's also a good idea to pick up some silicone lubricant for the o-rings.
