Solid piece as long as its not extended all the way out or supported. I bought this for my patrol car because the windshield is so far forward of the dashboard. It brings the GPS into a usable distance but found that it needs to be supported by the dashboard, or another part of the car, or it will bounce around like crazy! The suction cup is awesome and doesn't come loose like most other GPS mounts I have dealt with. Overall a good item at a good price, but there are some drawbacks.
The King of all suction-cup mounts

I wanted some more reach and adjustment on a suction-cup mount, and was impressed by this when it arrived. It was actually a bit larger and beefier than I was expecting. The two pivots and the ability to change the length are great. It's very well made. I actually ended up using a different mount, but I'm keeping this. I wouldn't want it to go out of production and not be able to get it, if I need it in the future for another vehicle/device combination. Note, other reviews say this is well worth it for $40, but it's listed at less than $20 recently. This is in a class above other mounts in that lower price range. Do not be deceived.
Beware of the Ball Joint - Updated

I just bought by first GPS unit, Magellan RodaMate 1700, and the Extended Mount (thanks to the Amazon Reviews). Had I not been experienced in extensively researching what I purchase on the Internet, I would have returned the GPS unit as soon as I opened the box and saw the dinky mount that comes with the GPS. Magellan should be embarrassed for including a mount that clearly would not work. I hope the GPS unit works better than the mount.

Anyway, I just installed the Extended Mount in a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. I am limited to where I can mount it since my state does not allow anything mounted on the windshield or dash for that matter. I ended up mounting it on the dash anyway, and extend it out and down so it is in front of my radio. The suction cup seems very strong and I don't anticipate having any problems with that.

Where I do have a problem is the the ball joint or whatever you call that ball on the end of the extender. The GPS unit remains in an upright position for a few minutes, and then slowly bends over forward. I was able to tighten the plastic screw thing just a hair more and so far it hasn't moved for about 30 minutes. I am hesitant to tighten it any more for fear of breaking the plastic thing. I haven't taken it for a ride yet. I figure if it flops over while parked, I probably won't make it out of the driveway anyway.

That is why I rated it 2 stars. I plan on updating this review if I can get some use out of the extender, and it doesn't keep flopping over. I also plan on returning it if it flops over again. I haven't read where anyone else is having this problem and hope that this is just a fluke or something I am doing wrong.

I've used the mount now for over a year and it works just fine. I still have it mounted on the dash and it does fall off every now and then, particularly in the summer. Not a big deal. When I use the alcohol wipes that you use to clean your glasses, it seems to do a much better and stays on for a long time. I doubt if there is any mount out there that could do a better job.
