Heavy Duty Product, But A Little Challenging To Install
J.E.P.✓ Verified Purchase•May 1, 2018
This is a much heavier product than the last two units I have installed in the same fireplace opening over the last 31 years we have owned this house. The last two being bright brass and we decided to "modernize" our fireplace opening. This is unit is a lot darker than the picture indicates. I had to install the riser bar to bring the unit up high enough to cover the fireplace opening, which is the standard size for masonry fireplaces. Installing the riser bar is not a simple process. Instructions will indicate to lay the unit face down. If you follow the instructions, you will need another person to help you. In fact, you need two people to install this unit. I attempted to follow the instructions for the riser install, which was haphazard to say the least. I turned the unit back over on its back and used a pair of old crocs I had to prop up each lower corner up about 4". Fortunately, I had a tool we call "kiss" to hold the screw while I attached the nut to it. I did this on both ends and installed the riser bar. Now to install the unit in the fireplace opening. I don't throw anything away especially metal parts and screws. We placed the unit in the fireplace opening and my wife held it in place while I put the brackets in place and tightened them. I installed the right side first to the lintel bar and went to the left side. When my wife let go of the right side, the unit smacked in me in the head. The lintel clamp (part D) has only about a ¼" lip and the screw provided (part A) is too long; thereby, allowing very little length to attach to the lintel. Again, fortunately, I saved the parts from the old unit and used the lintel and screw, which worked as it should. There is an alternative mounting method on page 8 of the instructions. It requires drilling into the lintel, which is something you do not want to do. Angle iron is made of very heavy-duty steel and you don't want to tackle the alternative method. I know this is a long review, but you need to understand what you're getting into. I looked at this product for three months and read the reviews before I bought it. Pricing is what drove me to purchase it. Suggestion: the instruction manual is available without ordering the product. I printed and read it several times before ordering. I would encourage anyone to read all of the reviews.
Only minor issues, and don't do the alternative mounting.

Looks great, color is a little off from the picture, but still looks good. Install is a little tricky, my advice is don't do the alternate install if you can avoid it. If you do the typical install and the brackets keep slipping off, then just drill a divot into the steel header and put the screw in that to grip on to. Had a contractor try to install this for like 1.5 hours during a fireplace remodel, with trying to drill the holes for the alternate method. He left to get a new drill bit and within 15 minutes I had it installed using the divot method. Customer service is also great, the insulation was missing but, they sent replacement insulation within a week.
A well made fireplace door for a reasonable price

Some of the reviews indicated problems with installation and compatibility, but I found this product to be easy to install and well made. The packaging was awesome, and it took almost as much time to remove the tape and cardboard protection as it did to install the doors. The instructions were well done and easy to follow. The insulation was a bit thin, and the product could be improved by including self-adhesive strips. Rather than cut to fit, I just folded it over and left it at full length. If I were to do it over, I might want more fiberglass insulation- and would purchase the roll of self sticking insulation that is made for fireplace doors. The issue is the space created between the bricks by pointed mortar. It allows air to escape from the fireplace. It would be easier to install extra insulation prior to attaching the frame to the opening. The antique bronze finish is darker than the polished brass unit we replaced. I prefer the brass, but it seems that it is out of style now. Overall, the quality of the product is superior in every way to what it replaced. I am very happy with the design and function of this fireplace door.
Handsome and Practical

This is a great addition to our living area. It helps to block drafts (and significant heat loss) when the gas log's off, and provides a handsome surrounding when it's burning. A little tricky to install because our fireplace is slightly asymmetrical, so a run to the hardware store for fire-seal caulk was needed -- probably a good idea in any case, but necessary because we had a slight opening at the bottom of the unit. Gets great reviews from guests and family members.
Rusted and Broken

I will raise my rating depending upon how my issue is resolved. The color is more dull than it looks in the pictures. The unit I received has a cracked pivot hinge on the mesh door and strikes the bottom of the frame when I try to open. Also there was a metal seal on the inside of the mesh door that fell off due to poor quality workmanship and rust. Yes, rust...the unit I received has rust on the mesh door frame, and not just a little rust, but a rather substantial amount. Installation was no problem, but you may want extra insulation. The insulation provided with the unit is for protecting the finish of the metal, not necessarily for sealing. I am a little disappointed for sure, but it's still an upgrade from what I am replacing. Hopefully the company will provide a solution to the issues I'm having with the mesh doors. I can live with the finish.
