Hotplate is useless for low temp . 139 degrees at its lowest setting.

I am not sure if there is a defect in this item but I can tell you on the lowest heat cycle it runs at a rapid boil. It will destroy anything as the heat was so high that steam was pouring out of the bowl. I would hate to see what happens if you turn the heat up.
