I bought this because I has a weak spot in my house. I either needed to get a signal booster or a better receiver, I opted for the second. This allows me to travel with the devise and pick up unsecured wifi from coffee shops and hotel lobbies instead of paying for access. It really works, The set up was easy and it works. I have a strong signal every time I need it and I can take it with me.
5 Stars for 5 Bars

This product is absolutely amazing. I'm in a guest home on a 2 acre property where the wifi is coming from a 10,000 foot main house. I'm at least 300-400 feet from the wifi router in the main home... and on lower ground. I could see the connection but I could not receive signal. This product not only got me a signal but it gave me 5 BARS worth of signal... EXCELLENT Product! Thank You Alfa!

I found this to be such a handy tool. The wifi on my laptop pooped out. After trying to fix it by replacing the card but the problem ran deeper. I opted to go external. While it is on the big size, the quality of reception is top notch. The software that is a bit clunky, but thats only aesthetics. This is a great product and I would recomend it to a friemd

First of all, it uses a mini usb cable. Get with the times and use micro usb please. Second, the mini usb cable it comes with is crappy and the device itself constantly goes in and out of connection; and I've tried with multiple different computers. I recommend you buy a more higher quality cable separate, such as one from Cable Matters, which is what I did and now it works great. The clip is great, and I'm glad I have two different antennae to choose from. It works as expected; I have a room far away from my router and now I can watch things like Twitch streams in the highest quality without buffer. Overall happy with this product.
I just want to connect to a local WIFI hotspot

I normally do not write reviews .. blah .. blah .. blah .. I'll state the facts (2016-08-27)

I am basically in a decent suburban area with several wifi connections around me (my local library, xfinitywifi, coffee-shop, etc.), my goal was to be able to connect to one of these networks (for xfinitywifi, you will need a paid xfinity internet account, which I have from my primary residence).

I first purchased the Alfa AWUS036NH which I connected to my MacBook Pro via USB. I had to jump hoops to get this configuration to work on the Mac (I think a PC would be easier), partly turning off the OS X System Integrity Protection. This setup is NOT very elegant.

I then purchased the Alfa R36 so that I could be untethered from the USB cable. The AWUS036NH + R36 setup is much better. Technically I would not have to have drivers installed on my MacBook (computer) and would avoid a technical setup. So basically this setup allows you to get outside Wifi (library, coffee-shop, etc) and route that through the R36 which then creates a local wifi network (with and/or without a password) that you can connect to via all your local devices. You can take this a step further, by buying an external antenna and further boosting your range (I didn't do this, so I can't speak of what to expect, but I assume this would provide a much better signal).

All in all, this setup works, the AWUS036NH is mobile, so you can take it with you on the go. You could also take the R36 on the go as well, but then you are stringing along two devices. Over all kind of a clunky setup.

My next experiment was with the TP-Link CPE210 (which I am giving 5 stars), at a great price it does a LOT and has a great user-interface. This device is really meant to be connected outside (I've done both, taped it to my window, pointing outside, and also mounted it on pole outdoors), the PoE (power over ethernet) is great, which allows me to run a 25FT Cat6 (or Cat5 would work too) to the device. I won't go into details but ill simply mention my setup.

So with a single device TP-Link CPE210, I get simplified functionality of the AWUS036NH + R36 combined. Using the WISP mode, I basically connect to an outside network (my local library, xfinitywifi) via wifi and the also setup the device to create a local network and broadcast a local wifi hotspot. It is that easy and awesome.

I won't make a recommendation, but am much more happy with the TP-Link CPE210 over the combined functionality of the AWUS036NH + R36. I hope this helps you make an informed choice and saves you some money and stress.
