Reasonably priced, heavy duty

We have heavy clay soil and without this tool, would not have been able to accurately locate our septic tank. Went much deeper into the ground than we could shove rebar.
Strong!

Tough enough to penetrate thick sod and get to the underlying objects, usually pipes.
Not up to the job - too much flex in the shaft.

The other reviews are correct, this probe is not so great about penetrating the soil. Yes I did remove the rubberized cover from the tip prior to driving it into the soil. I initially tried to drive it into the high-clay soil in my yard, but I wasn't able to penetrate the soil by more than an inch or so. I waited for a good rain storm and repeated the process. I was able to drive it perhaps eight inches into the soil without the shaft starting to buckle. Then it occurred to me to use a dead-blow hammer to drive it into the ground without damaging the probe. I was able to penetrate the ground perhaps 14 inches in this way.
I'm trying to find one of those green PVC storm drain pipes with a thin wall thickness, so I'm afraid to use one of the sharp steel soil probes also listed here on amazon. I'm probably going to have to give up and use a shovel to dig a hole.

Works as intended

Better than using a steel rod and gloves. Although the 5/8" or so tip is hard to push through tough clay soils...only thing that would be better is a thinner-tip steel model.
Don't buy it....seriously.

I read the reviews and it was mixed I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try. I live in Florida and the soil is sand, like butter. This thing will barely stick in the dirt just to hold itself up! It just won't go. I tried digging down 3 feet and then wanted to use it to go another foot...nope. Won't go 3 inches. Don't know if it is the thickness or the fact that it is fiberglass but the combo is a huge fail. My son thinks it would be good to find a rock in water!
