solid construction, but not perfect

This thing is *solid*. Like, keep in the back seat instead of a baseball bat solid. I only used it one season, but I took a *bunch* of samples with it. I submitted like 8 different soil samples to get tested, so lots and lots of cores extracted. It did the job just fine. The plunger was even more helpful than expected.
There were two main problems. 1) soil built up behind the plunger. It got really bad, and got super compacted. I ended up being able to remove it with a metal skewer, but it wasn't easy. And a bunch of the dirt got forced up into the long shaft, probably never to be seen again. I think this could have been prevented by somehow filling in the top part of the cylindrical probe connector, but this might make manufacturing much more difficult. And it isn't *that* big of a deal, more a modern annoyance. The bigger issue is 2) the inside of the sampling end is kind of rough. I didn't think this would be nearly as big of a deal as it ended up. The texture makes it fairly difficult to slide your samples out using the plunger. It's still possible, but it requires quite a bit of elbow grease sometimes. I'm considering trying to rig up the Dremel or a drill with some sort of polishing pad to get it down to a smoother finish, but I'm not sure if this will be more effort than it's worth. It *does* work, it's just a bit cumbersome.
That said, the only other decent looking alternative to this is the Oakfield soil sampler. I've used it a few times, and I'm not sure it's really any better than this guy. I would say very clearly *not* worth twice the price. I'm not really disappointed in this product, but even at this price I think it could be slightly better.

It’s well made!

This tool is well made and a lot sturdier than I thought for the price it cost. I used it to take dirt samples from my yard. It is simple to use, and to remove soil from the shaft.
Solid build. Sharp edges.

🩸 Extremely sharp edges. Impressively solid build however I sliced my finger while removing dirt from the device. Had to sand down the edges before I felt it was usable.
Minus one star for making me bleed on the driveway. ☺ï¸

Simple to use but depends on soil type

While it is very simple to use, it is not an easy task if you have very clay rich soil. It was incredibly tough to push it down to the required 6 inch depth for the soil test and actually get a 6 inch sample plug from the tool. Not a problem of the tool per se but definitely something to be aware of.
