Great bang for the buck.

Out performs MPPT in my opinion. See the issue is not Maximizing power delivery when the day is sunny. This is what MPPT does. No the problem is efficiently using power when it is cloudy. Works better than MPPT then, in my opinion. Less around for rippers to jack is an added bonus.
Replacement unit solves charging problem

Arrived promptly in good condition.
Would not work on off-grid flat batteries.
Worked once a fully charged battery was connected after which the remaining 3 batteries could be connected.
Red led flashing in charge control mode, should be green! Needs led pulling out, turning 180 degrees and plugging back in. Does not affect charging just gives misleading colour.
Connected to PV panels.
but they have a good performance, are easy to install and cheap

A 24 V, 1200 Amphours-Battery-System for a house on the Canary Islands with 3000 W solar power and 350 W wind power is served over years with 3 Xantrex (former Trace) C40 charge controllers and one MPP Morning Star charge controller. Within 14 years two Trace C40 sufferd a defect (you can't repair them), but they have a good performance, are easy to install and cheap.
Very good product!

Well-built, survived a rain storm, 90-page instruction manual written by someone who actually speaks English.

It's not MPPT (those are more expensive), but it's still a great unit.
Xantrex C40 as a charge controller for a DC power supply and 400 AH batteries
BRNovember 9, 2015
With adequate current available from our charger, the C40 maintains battery charge to within a few tenths of a volt. The application is a battery back-up system on a remote ham radio repeater. We have two 200 AH batteries with charge current supplied by a 70 Amp DC supply. The D-Star repeater system is connected directly to the batteries. AC power for the computer and accessories is developed by a Xantrex sine-wave inverter, also connected to the batteries.

The C40 is set to bring the battery charge to 14.5 Volts and then allow it to float down to 13.5 Volts. These are the levels recommended by the battery manufacturer. As the manual says it should, the green LED indicator on the C40 flashes when battery voltage falls below the float level. The number of flashes in the sequence tells us where the C40 is in its charge sequence. When charging is complete, the LED is constantly on.
