I bought this for my Liftmaster garage door because I wanted to be able to know when the garage door was open and to be able to control it remotely through my phone, and my Amazon Echo and Google Home devices. Setup was extremely easy. You simply plug in the power cord, and plug in one end of the ethernet cable into the device and the other end into your router. You can open the app, add the serial number for the gateway, then press the Learn button on either your garage door opener, or the button on your wall in the garage (if it has one). The entire process took less than 5 minutes.
So here's the big problem with this thing. And it REALLY rubs me the wrong way. In order to use this thing with IFTTT, Amazon Alexa, or Google (including Home, or any Android device), you have to PAY for a subscription. You get 30 days free, and then it's either $1 a month, or $10 a year (as of now). The fact that I've already bought a Liftmaster garage door opener AND this Internet Gateway should be good enough. But no, they want to charge a monthly fee to use the other services. Yet I don't believe iOS devices have to pay anything. Imagine if you bought a new car that had a voice command button but the car manufacturer charged you to use it? Imagine if Nest or any other manufacturer charged you to use Alexa or Google to control your thermostat. What if Apple charged to use SIRI? I get that $1 a month or $10 a year isn't expensive. But to charge people that have already spent hundreds of dollars on a garage door opener and the internet gateway to be able to use it with Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT is such an awful move. It essentially cuts off half of the benefits of even buying one of these things. I'll continue to look for other devices that don't charge for these functions. Btw, did I mention you have to pay a yearly subscription for EACH service? So that's $10 for IFTTT, $10 for Google integration, etc. $10 doesn't enable all of them, you have to pay separately for each service you want to use.

Super easy to get it installed and configured

I have LiftMaster garage door already. Usually I will use the HOMELINK in car to open/close the door. But there is few times that my wife forgot to close the garage door. This is exactly what I want. I can reuse my liftmaster garage door opener and it always will give me alert when the door is opened.
Super easy to get it installed and configured. I plug it into 2nd floor switch and it works.
More: If LiftMaster can improve their application with the following feature it will be great:
1, allow user to define when to send alert, for example, if the door is in OPEN status for more than 10/30/60 minutes. I don't want to get alert every time when the door is opened.
2, vacation mode, send alert whenever the door is opened.

Not quite smart

This is nice in that it allows you to open/close from the internet or their app. The problem is that I have started to build out a lot of smartthings at home and wanted to set this up so that, as my phone got close to my house, the door would open automatically. There is some functionality available but you now have to pay a $1/mo fee to get premium features. And guess what... opening a door is apparently not something it doesn't... only closing. Lots of maturity needed here to get this into an automated home. This has potential but hasn't yet hit the mark.
Read review and instructions by D. Villella - very helpful

I just had a new LiftMaster installed on my two-car garage and ordered the 828LM Gateway right away. (It was about $15 less on Amazon than through LiftMaster). I followed the step-by-step instructions suggested in the above-referenced review, and all went smoothly. I would point out just one thing on the Myliftmaster account registration (via the computer) that caused a slight confusion - the registration process asked to add the device, its serial number, and the place name. After doing this there was no indication that anything happened, and I couldn't see the device indicated anywhere. So, I moved on and downloaded the MyQ app, logged in using my LiftMaster registration, and added the device on the app (which did indicate that the device was being found). I immediately pressed the "Learn" button twice (as indicated) on my garage's wall-mounted control, and the garage door opener responded immediately. (I'm guessing that having a "Learn" button on the wall control may be available only on newer openers - it certainly helps to avoid using a ladder)!
I like the fact that the opener beeps loudly and the lights flash before the door is closed by means of the app. My garage door is hurricane-rated and very heavy!

Saved us when we were out of town!

At our old house, we had a complete smart home system so we could see when people were coming and going, and also had cameras inside. We bought a new house and haven't installed anything yet, but were going on vacation and was worried about the house sitter coming over consistently to feed our animals. We bought this as a quick fix, and worked great. We could see every time he came and went, but of course, if he just went to take the trash out, we didn't know if he was doing that, or leaving. It was quick and easy to install, and the app works great as well on the rare occasion we forgot to close our garage door (on top of just keeping an eye on the house when we aren't home).
