Our experience "blog"

This seems to be a great product but kids are unpredictable - you'll have to adjust to make it work. I'll "blog" this review with updates as we use it.

As of 2/11/15 it's just OK (3 stars):
Night One: In installed this IN a pillow case, over a pad on the mattress, and zip-tied the wire to his bedframe with Velcro holding the alarm in plain sight. The first night it worked great but scared him. He came and got us but we didn't even hear the alarm. We're on the other side of the house. We cleaned up and he went back to sleep.
Night Two: Because it had scared him I taped some padding over the speaker. It woke him up but he just pulled the covers over his head and dozed for I don't know how long - maybe hours. He had a bad day at school that day.
Night Three: I cut the zip ties, removed the padding and put the alarm under the top-sheet near his head so it would be as loud as possible. He dozed through it again.
Night Four: one of us is going to have to sleep tonight in the room next to his so that we wake up and get him moving. Otherwise, it's just going to ruin his sleep. That's it for now.
Night five, six: one of us is sleeping within earshot so we can get him up - he sleeps through it or pulls covers over his head. We've learned he's wetting at 11:30 PM and about 4:00 AM. We are of course encouraging but it's quite a commitment.
Night seven: success - he got up before the alarm and only had a little accident on the way to the toilet!
Nights eight and nine: back-sliding, very grumpy when he wakes and last night was a tantrum. Ugh. Still committed, though. We are experts now with extra sheets, a pillow case and jammies at the ready!
Nights ten & eleven - we think he's getting it. Ten was a late accident and he went all night on eleven dry. On eleven, I heard him moving around and braced for the alarm but nothing happened. I finally went in about 4AM when I heard him again and he was awake but told me, "There's no pee pee here, Dad." I tried to get him to get up and go, but he wouldn't and at that time of the morning neither of us wanted to force it. He lasted until 7AM dry! However, all three of us are VERY cranky in the morning. I'm useless at work. If I get another dry night out of it though, I'm rasing from three to four stars!

------------

I forgot to close this review... sorry. Read the comment notes, this suddenly just worked and we never looked back!
Not a cure-all, but it is helping!

My son who is almost 7 years old has been struggling with bed wetting. Some history on him: He had sleep apnea as a toddler, and had his tonsils and adenoids removed at 4 years old. He is a VERY deep sleeper, and he has sleep walked on several occasions. Before the Chummie he wore pull-ups every night, and he was dry 2 nights per week on average. On several occasions I would have him go without the pull-ups for several weeks straight to see if that would help....but it didn't, he would sleep in wet pajamas and wake up hours after he had wet the bed. Our doctor recommended a bed alarm system, and I went with the Chummie mat because it is less intrusive then the underwear clip. We have used the Chummie religiously for 3 months now, and I have tracked his dry nights on the calendar with stickers. It has been up and down, some weeks were great, but other involved bedding changes every night for a week straight! Overall he is wetting less often, and averaging 4-5 dry nights per week. We will continue to use the Chummie for as long as necessary, as my son does not mind using it, and I like getting him out of his wet pajamas and bedding immediately instead of hours later.

I also want to share with you how we use the Chummie, and some tips I have. The Chummie is the size and feel of a kids plastic placemat, or a floppy cutting board. It was more rigid than I expected, and is pretty noisy when they move around in bed on it. Since my son is a deep sleeper, the noise is not an issue for him. This could be an issue for light sleepers, or for kids with texture or noise sensitivity. My son loved the friendly look of the alarm device, and he liked that "Chummie" meant his friend/buddy who wanted to help him have dry nights. The mat has a long thin cord, about 8 feet long. It has a clip to attach to the side of the bed, or the pillow, but after about a week, my son was sleeping through the alarm. So it was nice that the cord was so long, and we could stretch it out so that the alarm is in the hallway, and now it wakes me up instead. The alarm is louder than a watch alarm, but quieter than a traditional alarm clock. It has different alarm settings, but changing settings or checking settings is difficult. There is a button on the side of the alarm that you can push up or down, the number of pushes up or down is how you change the settings. It was complicated to figure out, and once I found a setting that worked for us, I just don't mess with it anymore. This feature could use some improvements on future models of the Chummie. The Chummie is ultra sensitive to moisture, and since your child is sleeping on a sheet of plastic, sweat becomes an issue. The alarm will sound with the dampness of their sweat, creating a false alarm, but there is a remedy to this: layers! From top layer down: bed sheet (thin cotton or flannel both work), then a thin beach towel folded in half, then the Chummie, then a waterproof crib protector, then the regular mattress pad. I also fold one edge (about 4 inches worth) of the beach towel under the lower end of the Chummie, this helps keep it from moving around when your child rolls around at night. This sits atop the waterproof crib protector, just to make clean up easier on me. The waterproof pad is the same dimensions to fit in a pack-n-play, and it is a little bigger than the Chummie, so any spill over stays contained on the waterproof mat, which means less laundry because the mattress pad stays dry. Since perfecting this layer system, we have not had any false alarm beeping. When my son wets, I hear the alarm and wake up, then I push the button on the alarm to make it stop beeping, then I have to wake up my son, then I pull off all the wet stuff, I wipe down the Chummie with whatever bedding has a dry spot, then I make the bed while my son changes his pajamas and uses the bathroom, I make sure the alarm is still plugged in, and then its back to bed. Weekly I wipe down the Chummie with a wet paper towel, and dry it. It has not retained any odors or discoloration, and it seems to be holding up very well. Some reviewers mentioned that the wires came unattached to the mat, I think with normal use this would not happen, but if you tripped on the cord or pulled really hard, the wires could snap off.

So overall, I am very happy with the Chummie, and I think it is helping my son. I think the bigger issue is that my son is such a deep sleeper, and that the Chummie would be more effective on lighter sleepers. It is still worth the investment and the time changing sheets, and I prefer this to pull-ups or sleeping in wet pajamas. The only cons for me, which is why 4 stars instead of 5, is how noisy the plastic material is and the button to change the settings is awkward, however, neither of these is too big of a deal. Besides that I think it is great, and I'm glad that my son dose not mind it at all. I still have hope that with more time, my son will have even less wet nights.
Great Solution for Parent's at their wits end!

We purchased this back in March of this year (2014). At the time I was at a loss for what to do to help my 6 year old daughter stop wetting the bed. We were limiting liquids 2 hours before bed, making sure she went before bed, going to bed early so she wasn't too tired to wake up and go. But she was still having accidents every night. Sometimes multiple times a night. We had even discussed with her pediatrician about possible medical issues but she didn't have any. He had suggested some other techniques and had mentioned a bed wetting alarm. After the other techniques didn't make any headway, we decided to invest in the Chummie. By this time we didn't really have anything to lose. We went with the mat option since it was listed as flexible and I wasn't sure how my daughter would do with a sensor taped to her underpants. As the mat was described I was under the assumption that it would be like a flexible silicone. But it's plastic that's a couple of millimeters thick. It is able to be rolled up like a poster so it is flexible, but it's quite noisy when my daughter would shift positions in bed. There are holes in the corners of the mat so you can safety pin the mat into place. Sometimes when she would get in certain positions the sides of the mat would come up and dig into her but she didn't complain too much about it overall. With the safety pins, by the end of using the system, she had quite a few worn holes in her bottom sheet. But after using the system every night for 2 months her bed wetting had dramatically been reduced. Then by the end of June we were able to stop using the system all together. Which is a good thing because the wires that attach to the bottom of the mat that connect to the alarm part had worn enough that one had broken off and stopped registering if it was wet. Overall it's a great product that truly gets results. My daughter now gets up at night to go to the bathroom with no issues. We rarely have an accident. When she does, it's usually so small that she just has to change her underpants and go back to bed.

Pros:
*Mat is super sensitive to moisture that it only takes a tiny amount before the alarm goes off. Which by the end of the program means not too much mess to clean up.
*Doesn't have to attach to child's underpants so they can get up and change themselves while you change the sheets and wipe down the mat.
*Easy to clean and short "reset" time after an accident. Instead of having to unhook your child from the alarm, take the sensor off the underpants, clean it, dry it and then re-tape it back on to clean underpants, you only have to change the sheets (sometimes only the top sheet) wipe down the mat with a baby wipe/wet washcloth/clorox wipe, dry it with a dish towel and put the top sheet back on. Then plug it back into the alarm. Pretty simple.
*Long cord to the alarm allows the alarm part to be placed on a nightstand. So less intrusive for your child, more comfortable if they are stomach sleepers. My daughter is a stomach sleeper so when we tried the sensor on the underpants she didn't like that it was attached to her underpants. Then the cord that goes from the sensor to the alarm wasn't long enough so she had to wear the alarm on her shirt. So when she was on her belly, it would dig into her collar bone/shoulder.
*Holes on the corner of the mat so it can be safety pinned into place.

Cons
*Mat is super sensitive so sometimes when my daughter got sweaty the alarm would go off. (But really not too much of a con..)
*The safety pins holding the mat in place ended up wearing holes in the sheets. And you had to check them every so often to make sure they didn't come loose.
*Wires that attach at the bottom of the mat get worn pretty fast so I'd suggest keeping an eye on them. Otherwise you'll have one break loose and not even realize that it's not working anymore.

Overall this is a great product and I would highly recommend it for anyone who has a child (or children) struggling with bed wetting.
Great should have done sooner....

Great item so easy to use and our daughter was so excited to get out of pull ups...the first few nights were about getting use to it us and her just be patient it's hard at first getting up for everyone but it only lasted about a week of 2 times getting up with alarm..then it went to 1 time the next week and the 3 rd week she is doing great going all night dry 5 out of 6 nights. We kept telling her how proud we were of her even when we were getting woke up several times the first week. We NEVER got upset with her when we had to get up and clean her up!!!!! We had it down to a system extra towels ,pillowcases(what we slid the chummies pad into)and baby crib pads that don't allow fluids to get on mattress..all laid out next to bed and extra night shirts and underwear......we laid the waterproof pad down first then laid chummies in pillowcase on top and then put towel on top of pillowcase...we learned quickly with false alarms because of her sweating that a towel was needed on top of chummies to only set it off when she would pee..... One of us took care of changing the pillowcase and towel while the other cleaned her up so everyone could get back to bed quickly.......so glad she is so much happier knowing that her bedwetting days are becoming less and less and it will stop all together one day soon...........don't hesitate to get this......and praise your child ALWAYS
Chummie PRO is a Magical Product to Stop Nighttime Bedwetting Permanently

We bought the Chummie PRO for our teen son who used to wet the bed. Even after several visits to the doctor and some other therapy's, all of which were ineffective; a friend suggested I purchase the Chummie brand of bedwetting alarms as his daughter had stopped wetting the bed with this alarm. I did my research and shortlisted from the Chummie Premium, Chummie Elite and Chummie PRO alarms. I purchased the Chummie PRO alarm as it was a Mat based system and had 8 loud tones. My son is a deep sleeper and multiples tones was an essential feature for us. We didn't want him to get auditory accommodation, which I noticed is the case with some other single tone alarms. The entire system is extremely easy to use and very comfortable. It took a few weeks to get desired results and I must say that the overall system is absolutely worth it. My son has not wet the bed in almost a month now. He is free from bedwetting. We are thrilled that this system has delivered results. I hope I'd known about this alarm sooner. If Chummie can stop bedwetting for my teen son, it can absolutely stop bedwetting for your child as well.
