I like these filters, but...

Unfortunately, probably due to the hot summer weather, maggot larva had made a home in my charcoal filter. I did not have this problem last summer when I started using this bin with the same filters, so perhaps it isn't the product's fault so much as the process of storing food scraps in the summer. I have disinfected the filter and bin and am tracking it more closely. I am going to save everyone's eyes from the photo I took of the maggot larvae, but buyer Beware that this could happen. I immediately tossed my older filter, and replaced it with a brand new one, which in 2 days developed the larvae again. I've been collecting my food scraps for 4 years and have not had a run-in with these creepy crawlies before this, so this was a bit of a shock.

absolutely love the ecocrock. wish i had gotten one sooner. these are great and super easy to replace. they prevent or block any smells from the crock and they also keep out the fruit flies, etc.
only thing is that they work so well, you cant even tell when has been sitting there awhile. downside to that is that mold may grow on the underside of the filter. as long as you keep an eye on it and empty it regularly, there is no issue.

This was an emergency purchase after my household realized that what we thought were sesame seeds caught up in our old filter, were actually maggots. I have never been closer to burning down my entire house than in that moment of realization. Pro tip: don't let your food waste touch these bad boys in your compost bin. Otherwise, they work great to reduce the compost smell.

Composting is great. It keeps your normal garbage from stinking, reducing landfill, and just makes sense... The only drawback is where to temporarily store your compost (in the kitchen). I'm not going to empty the compost every day. So, I picked up the Chef'n compost container. It in itself is great. It's not an eyesore and I happily place it next to the sink on the countertop. These charcoal filters help make the kitchen from turning into a giant compost bin.
I think they work... I don't think I smell the compost. Then again, I may have grown accustomed to the smell and guests are too nice to say anything.
