EXPIRED EVOO... 8+ MONTHS PAST "BEST BY" DATE !!!!!

THIS EVOO "BEST BUY" DATE WAS 8+ MONTHS AGO.
NOTE: The starred ratings on this review represent my past experiences with Pompeian Olive Oil not from this most recent purchase of the Pompeian Olive Oil purchase this week from Amazon.

Today I received 2 large bottles of Pompeian Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Amazon and to my surprise and dissatisfaction I discovered that the freshness date appearing on both of the bottles, had expired over 8 months ago. I had searched all over the bottle for the freshness date and where the olives where sourced from and discovered some inconspicuous small print on the Pompeian bottle label that stated: "BEST BY" date and country of origin are printed on bottle." After carefully examining the bottle and being unable to locate this information, I finally decided to use a flashlight and a magnifying glass, and then I was able to discover the well-hidden date and countries from where the olives were sourced. The date and country codes were stamped near the bottom of the bottle on the back side, in black ink that was very subtle, with the small print being barely legible, and the best by date was: 06/2022 on both bottles making this date to be over 8 months past it's actual best by date. Not knowing when the olive oil was manufactured because it was not printed on the label, I will be calling Pompeian directly to find out the bottling date since olive oil generally has a 2 year shelf life.

Technically, if olive oil has a 2-year shelf life (and less for EVOO), does that mean this olive oil was manufactured or packaged /bottled in June 2020? Even though it is legal for a retailer to sell a product past the BEST BY date, shouldn't an on-line retailer make the freshness and expiration dates of consumable products be known to the consumer prior to the purchase? At the very least, since the on-line consumer has no way of seeing any of the pertinent dates on the product packaging, shouldn't the consumer be provided a disclaimer stating that the "best buy date" has long expired? One would believe that a retailer as large as Amazon would have some type of disclosure on the sales and product information stating that the product's "BEST BY" date had been long expired.

Many reputable manufacturers of EVOO provide information on their packaging and or labels stating the date of bottling along with the expiration or best buy date, and in the past this information used to be very visibly printed on Pompeian products, however that no longer holds true for some unknown reason, they now have omitted the date of manufacturing. Since the Pompeian Company has gone thru so many recent changes in their ownership, processing and corporate structuring I hope they do not become another one of those sub-standard olive oil producing companies who have lost sight of their principles and product quality. My family has been using and enjoying Pompeian olive oil for 5 generations and I am hoping I can continue to do so. As long as Pompeian can continue to provide the same quality olive oil that I grew up on, I will continue to recommend their EVOO as well as continue to pass along our family tradition of using Pompeian as our only choice of EVOO.

Although there are mixed publications out regarding the consumption of expired Olive Oil, most agree that expired olive oil should not be consumed and that it will greatly change the taste of any food you use it in and not for the better and also may possibly cause health issues. Shame on Amazon for selling expired freshness dates foods without disclosing to their customers. I have ordered food products and EVOO from on-line retailers in the past and have never had a problem with receiving anything with an expired freshness date up until now.
Great transaction and quality product
