This heater worked best when I mounted it horizontally (the long dimension of the heater is parallel to the ground).
When I had it mounted vertically/diagonally I suspect that the heat radiating from the coils would shut the thermostat off before the water reached the desired temperature. Now with the heater mounted horizontally it stays on.

Great heater.

I have tracked the temperature with this and it does a great job keeping the temperature constant. It varies less that .2 degrees, most of the time it's spot on.
Evil Angels.
Christopher Powell✓ Verified Purchase•May 19, 2018
My angels apparently were not satisfied with my older Marina heater through the winter and smacked it up against the glass, breaking off the bottom. I noticed it was broken likely days later, and unplugged it. I was thrilled that the broken Marina heater didn't electrocute my fish -- no matter if they were misbehaving.
Adding this replacement and inexpensive marina heater to the tank was quick and easy, already set to the optimum temp. The end has a protective rubber bumper to prevent the evil angels from breaking this one... I can't remember if I removed the last bumper for cleaning and forgot to replace it. With a digital thermometer, the temp in the tank has been consistent for a month now and I'm very satisfied with the performance.
Tank details... 32 gallon fresh, external filtration, marina heater.

Doesn’t work

Usually a dependable and quality backed company, Hagen fell short on this one. Heater was unable to keep my 75 gallon at 78 degrees even with a second heater in the tank set at about 68 to test that this one would work. Turned the dial up all the way just to get a light to come on for a few seconds and then off again. No company support, which is unusual. I would save your money on this one.
Struggles to keep tank warm
Ricardo Cañedo✓ Verified Purchase•February 8, 2018
The 300 watt heater struggled to keep my 60 gallon aquarium at the desired temperature. At the highest temperature (89 degrees) it struggled and only made it 79-80 degrees. I replaced it with a 300 watt Aqueon heater which works perfectly and is within one degree of the desired temperature on the dial.
