Power Supply Dead in 17 Months
Theoretical Schism•January 11, 2018
I loved this radio for both its portability and its exceptional playtime between chargings.
This morning, unfortunately, I woke up to the word "POWERFAIL" printed across the display. My batteries are fully charged, so I consulted the internet. It appears that the internal power supply is dead, leaving the radio truly dead. Sangean does not make replacement parts available.
I cannot recommend this radio to anyone, as I believe 17 months to be too short of a life for a radio, despite its excellence during a very short life. I have allowed the radio to keep three stars, because it was great while it lasted.

The Excellent Sangean PR-D15 FM-Stereo/AM Rechargeable Radio
HAG•December 25, 2016
I was looking for a simple AM/FM radio that brought signals into a valley - I live in Concord NH and the radio stations I listen to are in Manchester. It's not far in miles but the signal strength can be problematic. I tried a few other products but the signal was spotty at best. I have a Sangean table radio that works really well, so I thought I'd give the PR-D15 a try. It works great giving me clear reception with no need to move the radio around to look for a sweat spot. The radio is also built solid and the speakers are outstanding for their size. It has other features such as a ten station preset for your favorites, Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS/RDS) which means - assuming there is a radio station in your area that supports this system, the clock will set automatically when you tune to that station, an easy-to-read backlit LCD display, the ability to be used as a clock radio, and it can be plugged in to an outlet, use regular batteries, or you can install rechargeable batteries - I went with rechargeables. It simply works great and does what it's supposed to do. It's also the perfect size. I use it in the back yard and it has plenty of volume for such a small size.
Great radio, this model adds tone control

Great radio, this model adds tone control, a built in battery charger and carrying handle among other things to the PR-D5 radio.
Overall this is a great radio. I did have a problem at first

Overall this is a great radio. I did have a problem at first. For whatever reason, the FM antenna seemed to be on while on the AM band. If I touched the FM antenna, the AM reception would drop. I contacted Sangean and was not satisfied as to their explanation.
I took a big chance...since it would void my warranty...and opened up the radio to see what I could see.
The only thing that I could see that might cause the problem was the wire to the FM whip antenna was longer that it needed to be and may have come in contact with something it shouldn't. When put it back together, I made sure the wire was not close to any circuits. Now I have no Idea if this was the problem or not.
The reason I say this is because, and maybe it was the fact that while doing this, I also took out the batteries doing basically a reboot much like you would with a computer, router or any other electrical device.
For whatever reason, the radio started acting as it should.
As it stands now, this is the best AM radio I have ever had. I love this radio.
As to those that says it has a muddled sound. Turn off the loudness option...that will help.
As to what the initial problem was....I don't know.
All I can say is when its working properly, there are few if any radios as good as this.

Get the right kind of rechargeable batteries AND WORRY about AM reception suddenly disappearing for good!
LW•April 10, 2016
A note regarding rechargeable batteries: Well worth it to buy bonafide rechargeable C batteries. There are many brands out there that are not bonafide in the sense that they are actually just AA batteries in a C sized container, and therefore don't last anywhere near as long as a bonafide C. The bonafide C's are a bit hard to find. However, I bought a set made by SunLabz, and they have been great. They didn't last very long on the very first charge, but ever since then, the charge lasts a long time.
UPDATE: May 2017. AM reception just suddenly disappeared. For good. No AM reception whatsoever from any station. I live about a mile from the strongest station in Wisconsin, one that can normally be picked up at least a hundred miles away. This morning: NOTHING. Will never buy a Sangean again. I see that the Panasonic RF-2400 gets very high marks from a lot of reviewers. I'll try that. And BTW, the AM reception was not all that great anyway. Even being so close to that powerful station, I had to manipulate the positioning of the radio to get rid of static, and reception of several strong Chicago AM stations 90 miles south that I can get very nicely on an old Sony was fair to poor.
