Very pleased with this Kennel design

Very pleased with this Kennel design. We keep it in our vehicle. Supposed to be safest for pets... over the wire cages. The ventilation is so important in these plastic kennel's so I am so glad they designed it to be ventilated on the top and bottom halves. We have Cardigan Corgi's... and this is just the right size for this breed. Corgi's have thick coats and get hot easy so that is why I like the ventilation on this. If you have a dog that gets chilled easy you might want to go with just top half ventilation to hold in heat. A couple assembly pointers... watch both side carefully as you slide the top onto the bottom half. I did not get them lined up correctly on one side and didn't know it until I looked better at the instructions. It was hard to understand in the instructions for this part as to what they meant... but you will see if you look very close at the side slots. Turn it over to get a better look to see how the mechanism tracks into place. Once slid on correct, it's sturdy. The plastic screw tops can be stripped easily on the metal bolts if you are not careful to line it up right. They give you one extra and I did have to use it. Overall... very pleased with my purchase after having owned several other brands/types.
Works great to carry my pet rabbits to the vet

Works great to carry my pet rabbits to the vet. It's solid and sturdy. I have only used it to carry one rabbit at a time, but it can definitely fit both of my rabbits. They're around 3-4lbs as of now.
Got the smallest size, and size matters!

It's hard for me to rate this. I bought the smallest size for my cat, not really aware of how the sizes work. Unfortunately it was too small but it would do a decent job for ferrets, rabbits or pets of equal stature.

To give you an idea, I provided a picture of the actual size in comparison to my size 7 1/2 foot.

It came with all the pieces, but it certainly couldn't handle a heavy/fat animal. Overall, if it was what I was looking for it'd be fine.
Loved it so much we've bought three

In this picture our puppy was 2 months old and 13 lbs so we started out with the crate for dogs 20-30 lbs. We're now on our third crate (for dogs 50-70 lbs) and can't say enough good things about it! We originally had one of those metal wire crates, but after reading some warnings about how dogs can get their dew claws caught on the larger holes, we looked for a plastic crate. It's super easy to assemble and lightweight, but sturdy! I think our dog also likes that he can see out in all directions in this crate.
Design Disaster and Poorly Made

I've used Petmate kennels for many years, and have always found them sturdy and well-designed. But their new Compass line of kennels is a total disaster"¦. in both design and execution.

Design problems: This new Compass design adopts a different approach to securing the top half to the bottom. Instead of setting the top in place and securing it with built in clips, you now have to set the top onto the bottom and slide it forward about 3 inches into place. The biggest problem is that there are 6 plastic guide slots (6 on the smallest kennel -- 8 on the larger ones) that have to be lined up correctly in order for the top to slide into place correctly. If they're not in perfect position, the top won't fit right. And it is very hard to get all 6 guides in the right position while sliding the top into place. (You've only got two hands!) This basic design flaw is exacerbated by the fact that the kennel is more cheaply made than it used to be (see below). Another design issue is the need to use metal screws and plastic nuts to secure the top after it has been slid in place. The old snap-clip design was so much better -- easy to use and no small parts to get lost. It is difficult and time consuming to take the kennel apart and reassemble it. One positive design feature: the new double-pivot door is easy to use and versatile.

Execution flaws: The first thing you notice is that the kennel is considerably flimsier than the old ones -- thinner plastic, easily distorted out of its proper shape. This is also an assembly problem: because the plastic is so much thinner, the sides of two halves (especially the bottom) tend to be warped out of their proper shape. This makes the assembly process (see above) much, much harder as you have to push the sides into their proper position while sliding the top, so that the guide slots line up correctly. Only two hands, remember? Quality control is poor: my new kennels were missing one of the metal screws (there were 3, should be 4).

In summary, I strongly suggest buying somebody else's kennel.
