Great popcorn

Delicious tasting popcorn
Takes a bit longer to pop than yellow, but tasty, soft, and definitely less hulls

First of all, I thought this was great popcorn. The bags arrived just fine, and the colors of the corn are really pretty. I got red, blue and purple popcorns, exactly as shown.

I bought a new silicone microwave popcorn bowl to test with this. I first popped some yellow grocery store popcorn in it so I'd know how it worked and how long to pop for. The bagged popcorns I popped before generally were for 2 1/2 minutes. I found that regular yellow corn took roughly 2:45 minutes. These popcorns took 3 to 3:15 minutes.

Before this review, I popped (and ate!) roughly 1/2 of all 3 bags. I wanted to see the difference in taste between them, how long they took to pop, and how different they were from 'regular' store popcorn. Since I'm dieting, I am eating TONS of popcorn as snacks, so was happy to do lots of experimenting.

Here are my observations:
1. This popcorn IS delicious. There ARE fewer hulls, and the taste is lighter and sweeter and easier to eat.
2. It takes LONGER to pop by a few seconds than the regular store yellow popcorn, using the same container, and the same amount.
3. It burns FAST when you overpop by even a few seconds.
4. You have to listen for the pops to stop, and stop it quick. In my microwave, I'm finding that it's roughly at the 3 minute to 3:10 mark.
5. There are always roughly 10% of unpopped kernels per batch, regardless of color type.
6. The time gap between the first pop to the last pop is really long compared to bag popcorn.
7. The first to pop start turning yellowish by the time the last pop, so your batch isn't evenly white

That said, when it's done, it's fluffy, light, the hulls aren't as bad as yellow popcorn as advertised. Also, the kernels are softer and less chewy, as well as smaller than yellow store popcorn.

After some experimentation, I discovered the best popping method for me, so here's how I do it in a silicone microwave popcorn maker.
1. I fill the popcorn to the line in the silicone for popcorn (I think it's 2 Tablespoons, but haven't measured exactly)
2. I add 1/2 a teaspoon of virgin coconut oil that's been sitting on the counter so is very soft.
3. I stir the coconut oil in with a fork, so it coats every kernel, then sprinkle top with some salt.
4. Set the microwave for 3:15 (3 minutes, 15 seconds)
5. Start listening for the popping sound to slow down to 1 pop, then open the microwave and shake the container (roughly 3:10 for all 3 types-remember, your microwave may not have the same power as mine)
6. I pour into another bowl to eat. Sometimes I add a dab of melted butter to the top (and this is omg delicious, but butter wrecks my diet)

One more point. I read that moisture in the microwave makes popcorn pop more completely. So I tried rinsing out the silicone first and dumping it out, so it was damp before popping. This makes the more crunchy popcorn more 'chewy' and closer to the texture of yellow popcorn. Can't say I like it better, so I don't rinse it first. Just letting you know the results of a more humid popping environment.

That said, I'm not sure if I would buy this particular set again, because I'm not seeing a huge difference between the 3 types other than having nifty color kernels. It was well worth trying, I've always been curious how different colored popcorns were different. I may try the larger size of this brand tho. It was indeed good popcorn, and I go through tons of popcorn anyway. The star off was because I didn't want to say the popcorn was PERFECT, because while it was excellent, it wasn't the best popcorn possible.

Pix captions: the kernels just coated with coconut oil, and the finished popcorn from those kernels.
Hope this helps:)!
Better than store bought.

i like the taste of all three of these kernels/popcorn when popped with Ghee and i'm going to gather it will taste good when popped with peanut oil in future too. I got these to pop in microwave since i saw some reviews saying they pop well in it, well that didn't turn out to be the case when i popped the blue kernels and popcorn came out a bit tasteless as well.. After that episode, i decided to pop all of these on stove. The blue had a bit more flavor that way but, more hulls for some reason and again a bit of the kernels did not pop, about a tbsp worth out of the 6 i used.. The same was so with the red and the purple kernels as well, about a tbsp of each did not pop. I tried with regular oil and with Ghee, didn't matter, kernels did not all pop. i get there will always be a couple kernels not pooped but, a tbsp each time seems a bit much. in the microwave dash popper maker, i only used 3 tbsp of kernels and still had quite a few kernels un-pooped as you can see in pic.. Not so sure we will buy these again but, if we do it will be the purple kernels for we liked those best.
