A Nice Small-Scale Loom
2 Grey CatsJuly 14, 2016
I have used this loom before, a borrowed one, and I felt it important to post a fairer review than the earlier one here. It is a very nice small frame loom, and the warp-thread spacing makes it good for sampling or testing a yarn or pattern before weaving a larger project. The loom is big enough that it is possible to make various small but actual projects (and not just mug coasters). It comes with a yarn needle, a mini stick shuttle, and a comb beater--which many small looms do not include. As with all looms, one has to know how to keep the side edges (selvages) straight so they don't draw in as one weaves the project. The trick is to lay in the weft yarn at a 45° angle, and then press the weft down with the beater--don't pull on the weft thread. The warp spacing is fairly close, which might make it challenging for a young child, but older kids should have no trouble. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is plastic, and manufactured in China--whereas many other loom companies (Harrisville, for instance) have made small looms in the USA out of hardwood for years.
just a kids toy...

I'm a professional weaver. I bought this for a tiny little travel loom. Unless you have heddles, it's going to draw in and there is nothing you can do about that. You can make your own heddles easily enough. But if you're not going to use heddles, then enjoy your project that gets narrower and narrower and narrower the more you weave. I'm going to give it away as a gift. It's SERIOUSLY not worth the money. It's just a cheap piece of plastic with an over inflated price tag.
