I like it, but if you're on a tighter budget

This is basically just a more stylish UV-5R series radio. It's more expensive, but the look and feel is something I was looking for. Performance is no different than my UV-5R5, everything is basically the same as the UV-5R, down to the position of the buttons. Personally, I like it, but if you're on a tighter budget, the 5R is about 20-30 bucks cheaper and you'll get the same performance out of that. Some people are saying they get better performance from the UV-5R, but, I haven't noticed any difference in my area.
Not what I paid for - typical bait and switch.

Not what I paid for. Yes, I knew this was just a UV5R internally but ALL pictures - even the box my radio arrived in show an inverted display. That is what I wanted, that is what I expected. I have reasons for needing the inverted display.
If the false representation had not been made it would earn the marks of any other UV5R but since it is a typical chi-com bait and switch ripoff it deserves the lowest score possible.

GREAT reliable little radios...

I love these things- easy to program if you use the RIGHT cable... there are many cables out there "for" these that don't actually work, so check reviews carefully. This is the same as the famous UV-5R as far as programming- it's identical but I feel this radio is better due to a different antenna. I have a 5R as well. It's not 100% "as good" as some of the famous Japanese brands, but it's good enough for most people and so cheap that if you break it you can just get another one, slap in your programming data and back in business.

I bought this for my son after he did the research and he picked it out. Its worked great, and the sensitivity compares to my Kenwood TK-280 using the same antenna. We've had 9 mile simplex QSOs from his radio and the stock antenna to my mobile radio in the car. I recommend this radio.
Good Entry Level Radio!!

For the most part this radio is a great radio covering 2M as well as FRS...The software available from Baofeng to program the radio is horrible at best but I found using Chirp (google it) is far better. As a starter radio for an amateur this is a good start for a little money!
