I should have listened to the other posts regarding this fan. Mine quit working after only 4 months. There is no user's manual to show you how to clean or oil. I took it partially apart to attempt to do so (huge pain....tons of screws)....it ran for one more day....and stopped again. Granted it ran 24/7....but I can't afford to buy a fan every 4 months at this price. Plus the shutters are cheap pieces of tin foil. Buy their cheap plastic fan....I've had that running 24/7 for over a year now in the same environment.

I'm using this for kind of an off-label application, so your mileage may vary.

I bought this to install in a 16 inch wide kitchen window because whoever condo-ed my building neglected to ventilate the kitchen ranges. Three or four times a month, the "burger alarm" email circulates when the wired smoke detectors that connect to each other in all four units start shrieking at all of us. Usually, it's my husband who sets them off.

I mean, I'm glad to know that they work quickly.

Anyway.... I had been using a line of desktop fans to channel the air/smoke toward this little kitchen window. This left me with greasy fans that are hard to open up and clean; plus this method did a better job of pulling the stovetop flames sideways than it did of grabbing the smoke and directing it out the window. So, I bought this.

It's kind of flimsy, and I had to put the shutters back together when it arrived. But it seems to do a workmanlike job of pulling air through and out of the kitchen without pulling the cooking flames off the pans. That is everything I need it to do.

Cons: flimsy and freaking LOUD. Stressfully so. Also, if you happen to be an idiot? (Like me.) You might want to rig some kind of safety cage behind the blades so that you don't try to adjust the shutters while the fan is running. (I know.)

Pros: 14-inch fan fits in a 16-inch window and keeps the kitchen clear of smoke. Comes with a "‹power cord attached. Contractor-free solution, but probably not permanent, due to noise issues.
It works

Professional Products 12" fan w/louvers - It's ok, runs quiet, not much vibration, has very good flow for its size. Arrived with bent arms so the fan would not initially rotate. A 2 minute fix, but the box was not damaged, so something most likely happened at the factory and was not addressed. We will see how long it lasts, but for now, it works just fine.
Not Balanced

The fan blade is not balanced. I use it on a greenhouse and it shakes the entire structure. LOAD!!! My fear is that the bearrings wont last very long with this amount of shaking.
Five Stars
