some the recommended ones which don't seem to make a difference
JonFebruary 28, 2018
Have owned since 2015. Box does copy and has a decent picture. However it has been very finicky as sometimes I have to try multiple times to get it to work. Sometimes it just stops working in the beginning to middle of the recording, sometimes it records. The recording light is flashing blue (1080p) and if I check it later it has gone back to steady blue or sometimes alternating blue-green. I have done the firmware update and have bought numerous new 16gb flash drives, some the recommended ones which don't seem to make a difference. I have also reformatted to FAT32 as recommended by the manufacturer which unfortunately you then need to convert to NTFS as FAT32 gives you multiple files. I have downloaded to a 2TB hard drive in NTFS format which also has worked intermittently. I record from bluray and settop box all through my surround sound Denon receiver. I have rewired to bypass everything and just come directly from the source to the cloner box to the tv and that did not seem to help. I have done probably close to 200 recordings of about 2 hours each since I purchased this box. I like doing it so I can carry the movies with me in my motorhome when I'm out RVing and being on a usb hard drive makes it all very compact and convenient. I have contacted the sellers twice so far and they have responded quickly with suggestions but it still is random on the results. Going to see if there is a better one out there but I'm very skeptical about many of the 5-star reviews I find on Amazon these days. Seems like many are bogus reviews.
Great way to capture HDMI video from PlayStation or PC
StefanLJune 23, 2017
Works very well. Captures 720p & 1080p + HDMI audio. You do need to add the ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI Mini Splitter (VHD-1X2MN3D) to sort out HDCP. In other words, if you want to record a PlayStation 3 output you will need to add this splitter. With a large enough USB drive, this will record for several hours. I left it on overnight as a test and got a 30.5 GiB file for a duration of 8h30min. The drive needs to be formatted to ntfs.

HD-Cloner Box, great recording but may not be just "plug & play".

HD-CLONER BOX - some notes

While I was able to make it do everything it should, it was not easy and in some cases time consuming. hence the reduction.

To start, while many instructions start out "if the green/blue is not flashing..", there is nothing to tell you what to do if it is flashing. It seems to mean there is a problem with the input (in my case a bad cable).
Second, at 1080 you get about 13 minutes per GB so a two hour recording will need close to 10GB. I am using a 128 GB USB 3.0 flash formatted NTFS. (Good news: a fast 2.0 is fine).
Third there is no power-off passthrough so the device must be turned on (wall wart included) for a display to appear. That says it gets rather warm in use so you should not just leave it on 24/7
Also intelligent devices connected to the input are liable to either have no display or display an error. If this occurs you need to hold down the RECORD button for about five seconds before the connection makes properly. Then there may be another delay while the source box synchronizes.
On the plus side the CHAT line at cloner-alliance dot com was very helpful, negative that this URL does not appear either on my box nor my instruction sheet.

Bottom line: once I got everything working it did produce a very good recording for me. HD-quality even using Media Player in full screen mode.

ps a ViewHD Model: VHD-1X2MN3D HTML splitter is one answer to the issue, can put the TV/Monitor on one side and the HD cloner on the other. Then the Cloner only needs to be on when recording. The downside is that again there is no power-off pass-through & users advise not to just leave on 24/7 without external cooling. An autoswitch may be used but this is really getting complex/expensive. Or you can just put up with manually turning on and resynching when you watch the TV.

pps there is no way found for the box to title the recording do a generic name is used. It is a good idea to change to something meaningful as soon as possible.
What a great tool!

I've had this box for a year (tomorrow). I love it! I've recorded all sorts of things. There seems to be no limit to the length of show I can records as long as it fits on the thumb drive I'm using. I format my drives using NTSF so my recording are not broken into 1gb files. One thing to make sure is that you wait for the box to stop blinking blue/green after you stop a recording. If it's still blinking, you will lose your recording.

The box has worked flawlessly for recording from all sorts of input. I've recorded while watching on TV and from my computer (I really like having HDMI out on my computer). I've created videos for how tos for work (basically, start it up, perform the actions on the computer and have a mic attached to the box so you can describe what you're doing while you're doing it.
Waste of Money, But A Lesson Learned

Chunks of recordings missing from every recording I've ever done. A consistent issue. Some recordings are slightly sped up and/or out of sync with the audio. I could've lit my money on fire and at least have been entertained while wasting it.

When making the decision to buy this product, I thought to myself, "this thing kinda looks like cheap Chinese junk." Then, looking at the mostly decent reviews, conceded that I might be wrong. It's happened before. If not completely wrong, it might be cheap Chinese junk that actually works pretty well nonetheless.

NUUUUPE!

Feel free to judge this book by its cover. It looks cheap, feels cheap, and doesn't do its only job. Goodbye, $100... we barely knew thee.
