I love this! You get so much that I don't feel stingy adding a bit more to make my tempeh. Also, if I want to make a big batch, I just scoop out more. I've found I just add more starter than usual to foolproof the tempeh making process, leading to strong, firm white blocks.

This starter is HUGELY less expensive than the stuff that comes in a few tiny pouches and adds up to almost $30 an ounce! And it works just fine. The tempeh pictured is my second batch, made with Chana dal and sesame seeds, and it is wonderful!
(I had trouble with the temperature of my first batch; no fault of the starter. Solved it by making an incubator out of inexpensive 1" thick insulation board from local big box store, heated w/seed mat on a thermostat.)

Great price and the product seems very active in making tempeh. You get so much that I add a bit more to beans than instructions call for. I've been using it for over nine months now and I'm still on my first bag which I've been keeping in the fridge. It still works great. I use it on lentils mostly and my one tip would be that you shouldn't overcook the lentils and try to keep them as dry as possible before adding the starter. The one or two batches I had which weren't very good were due to having too much water in the lentils and then the tempeh didn't seem to grow as well. This tempeh tastes great, definitely an improvement on straight lentils in my opinion. Price is amazing too considering how much you get. Highly recommended.
