I've had this for about a month now and it works perfectly on my Spa. I haven't added anything except another cup of salt and some PH minus since I installed it. BUT, I missed a very important note before I bought it and that's why it only gets three stars. It states in the description "weather protection required at power source" and I took that to mean a weather protected outlet. WRONG! Be sure to read the User Manual carefully where it tells you that the transformer cannot be in temperatures below 14 degrees. I neglected to read the user manual and had an outlet installed just for this little jewel and then found out it needs to be installed inside the spa equipment area if you intend to use it in cold temperatures. Who doesn't use their spa in sub zero temperatures?? That's when I use it the most!! So the final cost is much higher once you include the cost of an electrician (twice in my case).

I'd like to give this product four stars because it definitely does make chlorine, but the system is very difficult to use ESPECIALLY if you are colorblind...The system relies entirely on flashing lights to tell you what the settings are...The method of gathering vital performance information is extremely convoluted...I've had it running for a couple of weeks now, and still can't get the chlorine level where I want it to be and this is NOT the first timeI've had a saltwater spa, so I know this should be easier...I have tried to reach Tech Support, but they never return my calls...It's a real shame that they can't get their act together enough to give me the tutorial that will get this unit running properly...If I ever hear from Tech Support, I'll revise this review and let you know how it works out...Otherwise, it's going back for a refund...

What a difference, I have tried chlorine, bromine and mineral even frog spa and all worked but the maintenance and smells were just not what you want to relax in. Seems after you drain the water refill check the water then come back in two days to a sour smell. Our friends have a salt water pool with attached hot tub and their water always seem to be nice with no harsh smell. Ordered this after talking in depth to ControlOMatic and how this should help us out. Drained hot tub, refilled, We are lucky as our water is spot on for PH, alkalinity and hardness out of the tap. Added the amount of salt calculated by the gallons of water, took all of about 2 minutes to install the Smarter Spa, most of that was getting it out of the box. 3 screws, 2 to hold the box and one to hold the cord. Dropped it in and it read salt overload. drained some water added fresh, still salt overload. Drained about half the tub, added water back dropped the module back in and it registered Salt High which is fine per the directions. Lesson learned, add about half the salt and then test. This unit reads the salt level instantly so no need to wait. It produces the right amount of chlorine and turns itself off and when it needs more it turns itself back on. Only 5.5 DC volts. I could not be more pleased with it and a 40lb bag of salt from Walmart is less than $7.00 I only needed about 4 cups so I am set for the next 5 years for salt. So no more aroma therapy to cover up the yuk smell for us.

The Smarter Spa is wonderful! I almost opted for the ChlorMaker but decided to spend the extra money and am glad I did. A buddy who has the ChlorMaker told me about the salt to chlorine generation technology. I was intrigued and did some research then finally pulled the trigger. Crystal clear water for 4 months now, after everyday use by 1-2 people (often twice a day). After my initial water balance - every couple weeks I clean the filter and add a bit of Hot Tub Serum. I check for phosphates once a month and usually add about 5 mL's of phosphate remover (phosphates consume chlorine longevity). I keep and eye on the cell and have cleaned it two times in four months. The cell is easy to clean. Once again - crystal clear water - always! It has really made hot tub ownership and use enjoyable. Zero worries and surprises when I lift the lid and no chlorine/bromine smell. My buddy is upgrading to the Smarter Spa because he said that with irregular use of his tub using the ChlorMaker he tended to over chlorinate. Difference between the two - ChlorMaker cycles strictly based on time (chlorine levels not considered) while the Smarter Spa runs for a set amount of time but does not restart the cycle until the chlorine level reaches a low point. The set point is even adjustable if desired though I haven't adjusted mine. There is some pretty good technology there. I would suggest going to the ControlOMatic website, downloading the manual and reading through it. There are some power supply mounting parameter requirements. WELL WORTH THE MONEY if you want relatively trouble free hot tub water maintenance. My wife initially baulked at the price but she is now glad we did it.

This chlorine generator was the perfect addition to my spa. Took a little while to get it dialed in but now works effortlessly. The biggest thing I have learned is your phosphates have to be extremely low for this product to work. I haven't added a single chemical to my water in 2 weeks everything is staying perfectly balanced and crystal clear. I would highly recomend this product to anyone.
