Holy Cow! These are truly awesome chisels! I had mix match "set" of chisels. I bought some here and there as needed or when I found "nice" ones at an auction. Only one or two of my 10+ mix matched set would be considered nice; I found two vintage Buck Brother chisels. The others are big box store semi-cheap Stanleys. The big box store Stanleys do not hold a candle to these! I'm not talking about Stanley Sweetheart, but the mid range ones. I haven't used Stanley Sweethearts, but the reviews aren't great; neither on Amazon or woodworking forums. Stanley's slipped a little over the years. Plus, you spend a lot for the "Stanley" name and these were quite a bit cheaper. The price per chisel is much better as is the overall price. To be fair, the price has jumped 50% since my purchase. I would not have bought this set for $95! $64 was a much better price. Not sure what happened to cause the price to jump.
I didn't know what to expect when I placed the order. I had never bought or used quality chisels; let alone Narex chisels. I was very pleased! The handles are solid! They feel high quality and dense, so I won't be afraid of giving them a good whack. These handles don't have the slick, and sometimes slippery, finish that the blonde beech wood ones have. There doesn't seem to be a finish, but I could be wrong; I don't mind this at all. I prefer them to color naturally.
***NEW PARAGRAPH*** I took 2-3 weeks to make this purchase. The biggest sticking point was using metric chisels since I live in the US and use imperial. I wanted the best chisel for the price, and these seemed to fit the bill, but again, they are metric. Do I need to convert everything to metric? Do I need to convert just the chiseling portion? When you think about it, there's really very few (if any) times when an exact, specifically sized chisel is needed. I can't think of a time when I truly needed a specifically sized chisel. Dovetails and mortises are specific to the joint and wood being used; plus they can be made to fit what you have. By that I mean, if plans call for a 3/8' inch mortise, there's not a true need to make the mortise exactly 3/8"; the size could be flexed to fit the tools on hand. Pairing and chopping, different names for clearing waste, do not require specific sizes.
The blades, of course, is where the chisels shine; once you strip the shipping grease. That stuff is caked on there; I think it might be a lacquer. The best way to get it off is to pair it off with another chisel. The blades really shine when you sharpen them, and you'll have to flatten and sharpen them. These come "sharp" like any chisel you would buy...meaning they are not really sharp and you will likely have to flatten the backs and sharpen. This is really nothing new and likely not surprising as you will have to do this with any chisel you buy.
I took a few pics of the chisels alone and also included a Stanley 1/2" next to the 12mm (the 1/2" equivalent) to show how truly robust the blades and handles are. You have to see them in comparison for their size to be appreciated. The blades are huge compared with the Stanley. The last pic, from the back of the Narex mortise chisel box and it shows the different levels of quality Narex sells...just as a reference.
I love these things and think they are likely the last set of chisels I will buy! I can't say enough about how good these are.
