Good solid tool

This "brier" blade or small ditch blade can be used anywhere you need a machete. The handle allows greater impact than a machete and keeps your hands at a safe distance. The only work I have to do to this unit is additional sharpening and rubbing the handle with boiled linseed oil.
Plenty Sharp Out of the Box!

Council Tool 1230P01 12" Double Edge Ditch Bank Blade with 30" Wooden Handle. I don't have ditches to mow, but the back corner of my yard was a bit overgrown from a year of neglect. I had a bunch of saplings and vines that grew up among the trees. Dead branches too. Not enough for the full sized ditch bank blade, but more than I was wiling to hack down with a machete and saw. This made quick work of it. Mine arrived plenty sharp for my intended use, so I don't know about all those others that claim theirs was dull. It had a sharp but rough ground edge as if it had been sharpened with a belt sander, which is exactly how I sharpen most of my machetes. (I do have some that I put a knife edge on, it's a matter of what I use them for.) I am thankful Webyshops sells these on Amazon, they are hard to come by around here.
Better off using another tool

I had high expectation for the tool but it does not do well with the kind of flexible brush in my area. Tried some somewhat heavier stuff and far too much effort required to cut through them. Better off using another tool. It likely has it's place but I haven't found it yet. That all said, it does appear to well built and rugged.
Works fine out of the box.

Sharp enough to cut small limbs (1" diameter) and clear brush out of the box. I spent some time w/ it with a file and a sharpening stone and, while it is now a lot sharper, given the mass with which this thing travels once we swing it, I'm not sure if the effect was a ton different. If I were shaving with it, a razors edge might matter, but I'm not. I sanded the handle and applied some boiled linseed oil which made the handle look nice. Overall a stout tool...most beneficial in my mind for filling the gap between a machete/kukri and an axe.

This axe is a great value but don't disregard the reviews that say it's too heavy. I was winded after a few swings. It is VERY hard to stop a swing once you start. It's effective, but does need a sharpening. If you're out of shape, elderly, or otherwise a smaller person, you are going to have a hard time with this tool, it is very large and heavy.
