Didnt know about the Gen 2 till i got this one
MARK✓ Verified Purchase•September 8, 2023
The quality of the fabric and materials are good. For a couple more hundred bucks i could've upgraded to the gen2, but did not know until i got this xl tent but hey it was on sale, plus i needed it early on this year before the crowd. So far i liked it, just needed to upgrade to telescoping ladder, and maybe a see thru rainfly on the top. Kept us warm inside with 30-40 deg temps at night. I got compliments from my hard shell RTT friends and said the size is good for my family as i have 3 kids, 15, 10, 3 with wife. Fits 4 comfortably, my 15 y/o sleeps in the tahoe.. need to also ugrade to a diesel heater as propane heaters tend to have moisture/condensation inside the tent. I feel safer with the height of this tent from bugs, strangers, maybe bears at night lol, get this tent XL if you have kids"¦ just dont let them get close or lean towards the window or door for safety, better yet zip the screens close, only tried this winter camping, im excited already to use this tent more in spring, summer and coming months
Definitely a good buy if you need a large roof top tent

Smittybilt has been hit or miss for me. I've bought a bumper, flares, CO2 tank and other stuff from them. The bumper didn't fit well, the flares rusted within two weeks but the CO2 tank worked great. I was a little nervous about the quality of the tent but the reviews I found online looked promising. This is the XL tent by the way, it's about twice as wide as the standard Overlander tent. After looking at other tents this size I decided the price of Smittybilt was worth a shot. We got the tent delivered freight on a large pallet (it weighs around 140lbs) and the box was a little damaged but the tent was fine. We unpacked it and opened it up in the living room to check it out. It looked great overall with just a few small dents on the bottom of the tent floor from shipping. We folded it back up and mounted it on our tent trailer we're putting together and got it all set up. Every piece of hardware was there. All the seams look great. It has plenty of room for 4 people, maybe 5 if they're small children. It comes with a 12V cig lighter adapter, extension cord and LED light that velcros to the roof of the tent. They say the rain fly is removeable but it's definitely sewn around the upper support poles so I don't see how. The XL is relatively new and the instructions are for both the regular and the XL so they can be a little confusing. There's a special section for the XL that's randomly placed at the end of the instructions out of order so read them the whole way through before setting it up. If you need a large rooftop tent and don't want to spend $2000+ on a Tepui or Cascadia than the Smittybuilt Overlander XL is a great choice.
Edit (9/16/16): We have camped out in the tent once in the backyard to try it out before we take it on a long trip. We have had the tent setup for about 2 weeks so the girls can play in it and we can make sure it can "weather" a decent storm. It had stayed dry through 4-5 heavy rain storms with winds gusting 25-35 knots.
Also, we figured out how to remove the rainfly so it is for sure removeable. However, with the tent being elevated...it's probably not something you'all want to do regularly. You can open the "skylight" flaps on the roof under the rainfly and still get some good ventilation...just without the view.

Tent is good but not amazing

For everyone looking for a rooftop tent this is honestly the best option right now for folding tents for a low price. There was two things that annoyed me and that was shipping. It will ship though R&L and they honestly suck. They will not give you an update on where the package is. The other thing is that the instructions suck outdated with pictures and don't make sense. I ended up looking at at YouTube video to see how to put it together. All and all once the tent gets to you it's pretty good The mattress is okay I put a mattress pad on it just to make it more comfortable but other then that no complaints!
Can't give it a 5 star yet
Derk✓ Verified Purchase•September 3, 2023
I haven't actually used it yet. But I'm either going to give it a 5 star later or lower it. I've seen a ton of videos on it. And it seems very sturdy. I have not been in any other higher end brand roof top tents to compare. But this is definitely well built with semi poor qa/qc. Threads on some area they sewed over twice or is coming off. My only complaint is that your tent will leak without the rainfly on. Where they sewed the support around the star gazing zippers. It puddles up. Because it has a lip that collects water. Which then leaks through the fabric and zipper. The cusion was decent. I have tri fold mattresses I use for random guest or when we have a large party in a cabin or whatever. And it's pretty much the same thing. I am 150lbs and I don't feel the hard bottom except at pressure points when crawling around or whatever. The led is way to bright. Like blinding bright. But will be useful either way . In hard or decent Rain. You'll also get a pool of water over the ladder area where it has the awning. I'm sure this goes for all roof top tent. But I wish there was a real way if storing this vertically without the risk if ruining the cover or tent fabric from the tents weight. Also when you "season" your tent as recommended 2-3 times before actual camping. Do remove the matress. It did say to remove it but I did not think the Inside would get wet. But it did. A lot. From the star gazing zippers on both sides.
Update 5-22-2020
I purchased this january 2019. Took it on one 1 day trip that was a 2 hour drive each way. Slept it in 1 night. And have been storing the tent under my patio since (about 1 and a half years ownership). I recently took it out to get ready to mount to my trailer ice been building. I noticed all the straps were frayed. Can't even really call it frayed. All the strands are still attached. But they're all seperated. Which means the straps aren't braided. I never knew people made straps that weren't braided. See photos. I'm still keeping it at 4 stars. Only because I emailed amittybiilt regarding thebiddue and they are sending out a replacement set free no questions asked. But if in 1.5 years and the straps got like that. I hope they plan to continue sending me replacements ever year.

Great tent misleading description
Sunny✓ Verified Purchase•August 16, 2023
Tent is solid. Take care of it, and keep up with repairs and you will be fine. The mattress is thin but good enough.
I completely disagree with how the
description was handled. Do your research. It is not a Gen 2, but they use language like telescoping ladder, which is false. They avoid telling you it is a Gen1 tent, but they do give the model number.
