We have FINALLY eliminated spider mites on our plants overwintering inside the house!
We have had Hawaiian Ti plants in two large pots for 40 years. We move them to our screened in porch when it's warm, and bring them into our family room near a window when our Virginia weather turns cold. We have unsuccessfully fought spider mites with multiple different products over the years, watching the ever-present buggers suck all the life out of the green leaves through the winter, no matter what we applied. The plants would replace all their lost leaves over the summer, only to lose most of them the next winter.
We took a gamble in 2019 that Smite might be different. We could see immediately that the plants weren't suffering as much after a Smite application. But that winter season we didn't follow the directions to apply every 10-14 days to prevent infestation.
For the fall and winter of 2020-2021, a weaker spider mite infestation reappeared on these and other plants overwintering together. We were much more careful to apply every 5-7 days until the infestation was controlled, and then spray all the plants at least every or every other week. We didn't go to the trash bin with any dead plant leaves! The few bugs that tried to persist are now just minimal dry flaky residue to wipe away or hose off. Now ALL of our plants will move to the porch full of healthy green leaves.
We will always keep a little bottle of Smite in the house and a spray bottle ready with Smite mixture for regular treatments of our plants in the house over the winter. The smell is wonderful, and the results are FANTASTIC.
