I replaced a failed heat cable for a mobile home with this one last fall. It has now got me through the winter with below zero temps so I have to say it works fine. It has a light that indicates power but that does not guarantee it is working. The one I replaced this with also had a light that operated off the internal thermostat so you could actually know for sure it was working. I am sure it is cheaper to make them this way and in any case I could not find one with a thermostatically controlled light anymore. The reason for only 3 stars is because of no way to know, other than frozen pipes, that it is not working.
Looks well made, reasonably priced. This unit has an LED in its plug to indicate it is being fed with power. Has built in Thermo

Looks very well made. I already have another brand of heating cable installed on the application I bought this unit for. The old one has been in place and problem free for about 20 years with no problems. I have always unplugged it after the Winter season was over each year. I thought I'd buy a spare similar cable, so I bought the 3 foot cable shown here. I had asked a question prior to my purchase that went unanswered, so before I put this new unit away in storage, I wanted to test it and made sure it works OK. I did a temp installation following those that would be appropriate for a permanent installation to make sure that the heat generated would be dissipated. My unanswered question was how much current and or wattage does this 3 foot cable draw on a 120 volt circuit. I used my KillAWatt unit to measure these. The current drawn was 0.150 amps (150 ma) and the Wattage showed up as just under 20 Watts (18 Watts). I mention this in case anybody else asks. My old heating cable measures 340 ma, a little over 40 Watts when its thermostat calls for heat. Being that this item is a resistive heating load, there is no power factor needed to calculate in as the PF would be 1.0.
No ice dams yet!

So far so good!!! This is the same section of roof (taken from opposite direction). You can see massive ice dam last year and the major improvement this year. Last year I went through nearly $100 in salt and ice melt. Haven't used any yet and I didn't even take the roof this year.
Failed after 10 uses

Product was delivered and I loved it. I had ordered 2 and all was going great until the single stitching that holds the zipper on failed on one of the bags making the product unusable. It was the morning of the last day I could return it. Got a speedy refund and all was fine. Now my other bag is starting to do the same thing. The single stitch is not strong enough. Look for one that has a double stitch at the zipper and your trees will be happy.
Like the cable, Hate the hardware. Overall quality product. You might buy a bag of "Easy Heat" brand hardware.

I purchased two different sizes and therefore had to purchase two different brands. This one (Garden Home) seems heavier duty than the Easy Heat brand. However, the supplied hardware with the Garden Home was very hard to manipulate. The separators are stainless steel and spring back to their old shape when you try to close them on the cable. The Easy Heat hardware closes and stays clamped on the cable. I took most of my stainless ones off and used the softer ones from the Easy Heat.
Overall the cable is good quality and seems to heat plenty when turned on.
