This started off as a fairly nice hawk right out of the box. Im more of a traditional guy so I worked on mine a bit (see attached photo). I don't care for the set screw since its not really needed. The handle is made of hickory, which is nice (and when you sand it smooth it smells like a BBQ). The head is very hard steel. It holds an edge nicely and is balanced well. To change it to a more traditional hawk I removed the coating on the head, probably powder coat but I'm not sure. The blade has faux hammer marks on it which all but came out during removal of the coating. It has two makers marks on the blade, one on each side. I welded it over so the words are gone and added groove designs for fun and to make it unique, then dyed the handle and added some brass tacks and finished the wood in TruOil. Though its not a pipe hawk I added a faux mouthpiece on the handle for fun. I use mine as a belt axe and it does get used. Ive used it to split bone on a deer while field dressing, chop firewood, shave bark from poles, hammer tent stakes and pound nails and spikes. Its a good utility tool. Though handles are not easy to make, you can buy pre made hickory handles and custom fit them. Every handle will need custom fit and eventually the handle will break. Practice making handles from pine or another soft wood before you make one from hickory. I have separate hawks for throwing though I have thrown this and it works pretty good. All around a good purchase. Throw on a leather thong with some beads and feathers and it looks nice when its lying around.
