I've never had chestnuts before. And I understand that when you buy some thing "organic" that quality control is not something that should be you should expect. I suspect that in this case organic meant that no one else would buy them. It also explains why this is sold in a non transparent bag. Also all food is really organic, things like gasoline are also organic, your real should not use organic as a test if something is good to eat. The same goes for "natural food", have you ever seen unnatural food?
I'll try not to let my experience with this product prevent me from trying roasted chestnuts from some other source but it'll be difficult.

Usable, but not best quality

Despite having a sufficient amount of chestnut flavor and sweetness, these were a bit dry and bitter, so they were not appropriate for using in my Thanksgiving dressing. However, I was able to use them in a dessert where I simmered them in milk and some sugar, which offset the bitterness and moistened them up enough. Therefore, I am giving the product three stars. I would have given 3.5 but there is no way to give a half star.
I recommend buying these only if you are going to use them in a dessert with some kind of sweetness added (unless you like bitterness, of course).

Granted I have never had a chestnut before so my ignorance is profound in the area of comparison (& maybe a fair review), however this is what I can say regarding this product...
1) Roasted does not equate to crunchy goodness. These nuts have the texture of being boiled and have a waxy coat on them like apples from the store
2) The smell will take your breath away-literally! My husband took some heavy convincing to even try them...I had to apologize to him and my father for having tried them. They taste like old spoiled MOLDY peas and the flavor does NOT leave your mouth or nasal cavity. I tried to blend them in a chocolate vanilla protein smoothie and it masked most but not all.
3) and perhaps most importantly I could not find and expiration date anywhere so they could have actually expired and there was no way to know.
4)There are 5 or 6 bags so....if this is a trial run to experience chestnuts for the first time I would really pass.
Again I have no previous experience with a chestnut but I will say I'm done for life on ever trying one again I think. I rated two stars bc I don't know what a chestnut should taste like but when 3 of us can't stomach them I just have to think they aren't good.

Superb quality, buttery and sweet, cooked to perfection at obviously perfect temp as there is not even a hint of bitterness. Perfectly peeled with absolutely no residue. I used 4 bags and there was absolutely zero correcting necessary. Put them in my vegan dressing and even my none-vegan Thanksgiving guests could not get enough of it! This product is worth every penny!
Delicious and handy for the Holidays!!
