I bought this as a Christmas present and therefore cannot open to even see if it has all components but I am less than impressed. The box is incredibly dirty (as in you can write words in the dust), the box has been torn aprart and taped back together, and the handle is barely hanging on it. This looks like I bought this from a yardsale, which would be fine if I did... but considering how much this costs, it seems like there would be better product presentation. Will update after opened if all parts are not included.

AI! Robot! Voice commands! Build it yourself! This is a wicked fun sounding idea, and the kit includes a bunch of parts that have a lot of potential. The build and the stock program utterly fail to take advantage of these.

AI in this case seems to mean "makes weird noises and says a set of round robin catch phrases." You can do some basic sequence programming with the buttons and give it some voice commands, but the limited set of tricks makes it like talking to a very stupid phone tree. Turn off the AI and you have a servicable set of programming tools that're the same as all the other erector kits.

If you want a claw, some motors, a sensor pack, and a nifty low rez led display face, this has it. The stock buildout is blah, but the parts are nice.

My son got MAX for a birthday gift. He just turned 10 and loves to build (has thousands of Legos) so we were pretty sure this would be challenging and fun. It took him almost all day to assemble it. He didn't get frustrated or want to give up. This was the perfect challenge for him. Since getting Max up and running my son and his little sister are having a blast with it. For kids who like challenges, building and mechanics this is a perfect toy.

M.A.X. is a multi-platform robot that allows varying levels of engagement based on the user's skill level with computer programming. He can be a straight-forward engineering project testing your technical skill at assembling a foot tall, 6-pound robot with multiple gears and ledes. Thanks to the body-mounted command module, M.A.X. becomes a fully articulated and speaking robot using his pre-programmed software through a voice and movement setup in Levels 1 and 2.

For higher-level fun, download Spin Master's software to your phone and sync M.A.X., via Bluetooth. Now you become the programmer, and a range of independent commands is at your fingertips.

My 13-year-old son loved this project. He has built several Meccano kits "“ both preprogrammed robotics like Micronoid and Meccasaur, and programmable/responsive ones like the MeccaSpider. M.A.X. is a huge leap forward into the artificial intelligence area of robotics for Meccano. The instruction manual is detailed and well illustrated. This is a terrific kit that will challenge your STEAM enthusiast.
