Connect Sequence Important

It does what it is advertised to do. It converts HDMI to L/R Audio & Video. However, there are steps missing from the little manual. 1) Connect the A/V cables. 2) Connect Power. Observe color bars. 3) Connect HDMI cable. If the HDMI cable is not connected last, the device does not convert the signal, in fact no A/V signal is produced. I think the Power then HDMI sequence is the key.

While it's not perfect, it'll convert an HDMI signal to RCA, which is what I needed it to do. The kicker is that the device uses power and doesn't do a very good job of translating a 16:9 signal to a 4:3 image, but then, that's probably not the device's fault. It is what is it, and does what I need it to do.
UPDATE:
I rarely, if ever, go back to update a review, but after six weeks of using this device, I have since pitched it. The power cable became unreliable and often overheated, making me question its reliability. Also, the device would sometimes fail to display video or audio (and frequently both) and often didn't seem to offer any explanation for this, other than removing and replacing cables to amend the problem.
Hence, I recommend something else. RadioShack HDMI-to-Composite Converter The Radio Shack one doesn't require power and is worth the extra bucks for the reliability.

Good value, but extra "feature" might leave you wanting

It works reliably, accepts a wide range of input resolutions, and handles audio quite well. Also, when used with some HDMI sources, it does not require external power. However, it does have a "feature" that is missing from the product description; it has horizontal scaling that squeezes the input signal just enough to fit a 16:9 frame into a 4:3 frame. If this were an option, it would be wonderful, but it does this regardless of the input resolution. So, even a 4:3 source on the HDMI input is scaled, leaving it pillar boxed on a 4:3 display. Given the price, it's something I can live with, but buyers should be warned in advance.

Older sharp tv and every hdmi port went out. Probably a board issue, no need to invest the time and $$ on an older tv when I could put it towards a new one?? This was the perfect solution hdmi to component and I have Audio/video took 1 minute to install super easy plug and play. Can continue to use tv and at minimal cost. Hopefully product will cont to work for a long time. Has a good warranty also purchase extended like a buck more. I never do that but since the cost was so low I felt like, why not. Fast shipment, great product. Glad I found this can't beat it!!

Bought this converter to attach a Roku 3 to an old CRT TV in my basement that I watch while I out. Unit does exactly what it is supposed to do reliability for months now. CRT resolution is so inherently poor I do not think that the unit is affecting anything.
