Yes, the transmission needs to come apart to use this kit (there is no way around this). If your going to have your 6L80E trans rebuilt, use this kit to correct the issues associated with these transmissions.
Mine had all the issues this kit fixes, leaky pump rings causing the 4-5-6 clutches to wear. And an extremely worn pressure regulator valve inside the pump. Now it works perfectly.

I always use the TransGo kits in every heavy duty transmission I work on. They fit and work very well. Be prepared, the new 6L80 transmissions are quite complicated, a veteran mechanic will have no trouble but a rookie better get the ATSG manual too.
