This is the best shower radio I've had by a long shot.
The Guy with the Dogs✓ Verified PurchaseNovember 10, 2023
This is the best shower radio I've had by a long shot.
I've only had it a month, and I only listen to it 1/2 hour a day, so I can't judge its longevity or runtime, but it seems very solidly built, it's easy, ergonomic, and intuitive to use, it looks good, it comes with a good solid mount, and the sound quality is amazing for about a 2-1/2" speaker. It's actually pleasant to listen to music on it!
Unlike my previous Sony, I can receive two weather-band stations in addition to all the FM stations I'm used to. (Don't ask me about the AM; I haven't tried it...)
How to get out of the Weather Alert function
G&A✓ Verified PurchaseNovember 1, 2023
First, I really like this unit the only reason I did not give it five stars is the instructions that are included with it. To get to the point, to get it out of the weather alert function, press the weather alert button again to see the display say "off" then hit the power button again. If it goes back to the weather alert press the "band" button and you will go back to to FM or AM. Problem solved. But it took quite a bit for me to discover this.
I received the radio and it was everything I wanted in a shower radio: sturdy, attractive, and the sound and reception was great. A couple of days later I accidently hit the weather alert button, which is directly below the volume button. Whatever I did I could not get it off the weather function. I followed the instructions in the booklet. I could turn it off but it would go right back to weather if I turned the power on. I tried taking out the batteries etc. Nothing worked. I looked for some help in the reviews and found someone had the same problem in 2017; someone suggested in the review that there was probably something wrong with the unit. So I went to "chat" with customer service. We both went through the booklet and the same steps. (By the way this person was very professional and helpful) Same result, so I sent back the original unit and got a replacement. I got the new one and out of curiosity tried the same "mistake" sure enough same result. Now I knew there had to be another answer. As I was looking at the diagram in the book I thought again about the "band" button which is clearly stated to function as the one to use to go between AM and FM. I decided to press it to see if it took out of the weather mode. Eureka! it worked, so I had actually accidently returned a perfectly good unit. Someone is going to get a good bargain. Hope this helps customers and customer service. The answer is no where in the instruction booklet.
Great radio

I have 2 of these radios. I have had one for 4 years and I bought a second one a couple of weeks ago. The older radio has performed well, with no problems.
I only use the radios for FM and for the Weather band, so my comments apply only to those 2 functions. I cannot provide any feedback about AM performance.
Although sometimes I have to work on repositioning the antenna that comes with the radio, FM and Weather reception have always been good. This is not a tiny radio-if you are going to use it in the shower you will need some kind of support to place it on.
For a portable radio, the sound quality is quite good. It clearly does not compete with an audio set with big speakers, but it sounds pretty good.
To repeat. I have had one of these for 4 years and have had no problems. Yes, I DID "buy it again"!
Overall satisfied

So far, I am pleased with this Bluetooth-enabled shower AM/FM radio.

The radio comes with a bracket that allows easy installation to a tiled shower surface and it seems adequately strong for securely holding the radio in place. The handle smartly rolls into a recess in the back of the radio so it is completely hidden when not needed (as in my case since I installed the mounting bracket with the included ultra-strong 3M adhesive strips). Likewise, you can remove (or not install) the included carrying strap.

The sound quality is decent for a shower radio. No stereo (only one speaker) and no booming bass, but the frequency range seems good for a small radio. Better than my last shower radio and doesn't distort very much, even when played loudly. When using Bluetooth, the volume is dependent on both the volume setting on the remote Bluetooth device (e.g. iPhone) and the volume setting on this device.

I like that all the controls are push-button; no knobs or analog controls, so it is easy to control while showering. The FM radio is much more sensitive than my old shower radio. I can easily pick up all local stations and even some distant ones. The included wire antennae is adequate, thin, and relatively short (compared to my old radio's very long, bell-wire type antenna). The radio is fairly intuitive to use, but do yourself a favor and read through the short instruction booklet (written in multiple languages) before using to understand all the nuances of the controls (e.g. how to pair a Bluetooth device, how to set the clock, etc). I like that I can preset my favorite radio stations into five memory buttons (five for FM and five for AM). Having a built-in LED light (the owner's manual calls it a "torch") on the right-had edge is nice to have in the event of a power outage while you are in the shower. There is also a button long that same edge that will sound an internal alarm. I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that, as it isn't very loud. So you are better off yelling for help if needed than pressing that alarm button.

I'm not sure what others are complaining about regarding the short time-off timer, nap timer, and auto-off settings. To me, it is just easy enough to simply press the Power button when you are finished listening to the device and everything shuts down (except the clock display). I will probably never use the timer functions, as I only plan on using this as a shower radio/speaker, and not as an alarm clock or portable radio.

I'm knocking one star off for a few things. First it is a bit too pricey ($85.00) for what it does. Second, the rubber cover that protects the connector port for the optional power supply (located on the left-hand edge) doesn't stay closed very well. It wants to pop halfway open. I will probably seal it with a small dab of silicone sealer just to be sure no moisture gets in through that port, especially since I don't plan on buying the power adapter. And I can always easily open it back up in the future should I change my mind. And third, for the price it should have included two-way Bluetooth so I can at least control the playback functions on my paired iPhone with this device. It would be nice to have a better display that shows info about what is playing via Bluetooth and maybe even album art. As it is, the display only shows you the current time of day and some simple device status information (such as radio band, Bluetooth pairing, battery life, etc). The contrast of the monochrome LCD display could be sharper, too. Maybe the next version of this radio will have two-way Bluetooth. For me, this wasn't a deal breaker, though.

In summary, I would recommend this device for anyone looking for a good quality radio/Bluetooth speaker to use in their shower at this price point.
Good sound - nice features

We completely remodeled our bathroom. To help make the room look more "updated" we wanted a new radio to replace our GE Bathmate radio which we've had since about 1986 or 1987. We wanted a radio that would hang on the wall, thus a "shower" radio wasn't in our sights.

We wanted a radio that would sound good (considering the size and it's a radio). I compared the sound of this Sangean and it is better than our old Bathmate (which had a good sound for a radio). It's only been on the wall now for about a week. During that time frame, it is working well. Sounds good. Haven't had to yet, and hope the need for it doesn't happen, but it does have weather alerts and a built in flashlight; which if the need arises will be handy features.

I can't address battery life as we haven't owned it long enough yet to determine what the battery life will be. The GE Bathmate took 4 C batteries and 1 AA for the clock. Those batteries would last probably 9-12 months, based on about 2 - 3 hours a day of playing. I guess we'll see how the 2 D batteries compare.

The radio we purchased is white. It looks great on the wall in our bathroom and matches our decor very well. There are NOT very many radios out there that are wall mountable, occupy relatively minimal wall space, are water resistant, and have a good sound. This is one of the few that meet that criteria.

If you don't want to mount it on the wall, it would easily sit on a counter. It also has a very versatile handle that allows you to easily carry it, hang from a hook, etc. It also comes with a strap. It has a single wire FM antenna which you can string out as needed if the reception is not good with the antenna stored inside the radio.

Based on the features and sound, I would highly recommend this radio. Having said that, it is based on only having the radio in place for about a week as of the date of this review.

Update: 1/16/2022

We have been using the radio about 2 hours a day since the first part of July. Thus, a full 6 months. The sound is very good and clear with the local radio stations. We have used it only for listening to the radio, so can't speak to the other features.

We have not replaced the batteries yet. The indicator just went from 2 out of 3 bars, to 1 out of 3 bars. But still clear and no static or noise. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the batteries won't need to be changed until February, about 7 months of use. That's for 2 D batteries. Our old radio used 4 C batteries and they maybe lasted 8 -9 months. Thus, I don't consider this to be a battery eater.
