As a basic Kabar-based fighter, this is a good knife (this is the same design as the classic WWII combat knife, but unlike Kabar, Ontario still has a government contract. Mine was bought on the secondary market and was the property of a member of the military). The steel is a tough, basic carbon variety that will rust easily if not cared for. The handle is a rubbery polymer that feels fairly comfortable in hand, mimicking the leather handle of the classic marine fighter in shape but more resistant to the elements and cheaper to manufacture. Unlike the original, it has an extension of the handle material in a hawksbill type shape to enhance grip, but one loses the metal butt plate from the original design. The coating on the blade seems to be painted on vs parkerized or blued. The sheath is a cheaply made combination of leather and some kind of canvas-type material (and cardboard?). Mine was very tight-fitting and the knife doesn't slide all the way in. Luckily the traditional leather sheath from Kabar can be had for $10 in black or brown and fits perfect.

It is a good option for a cheap, basic USA made fighterif you don't mind the crappy sheath and like the handle. I think it's a great first large fixed blade (for a first general knife that's smaller I recommend a mora). For the price, this tool is hard to beat. Good steel, comfortable handle, well made domestically.
