Favorite brace ever for performance and agility. Works for sand Volleyball too!
Greg✓ Verified Purchase•September 14, 2023
This is my favorite Ankle brace and I have used about a dozen other top models. This Zamst A2-DX is easy to put on and simple to consistently get the right pressure for comfort and blood flow. I use this brace primarily to play competitive volleyball on hardcourt, grass, and in the sand where I need support and to keep my agility. The brace has some lateral bulk when wearing with shoes but is acceptable. This brace works well even without shoes. For sand volleyball, I wore a simple compression sleeve to keep sand from rubbing the skin raw and the Zamst on top of that. It has been very durable for me. I have played volleyball 3 nights a week for the last year with and just now the stitching on the bottom straps is starting to fail. It is still functional, I can easily repair that one section of stitching and the rest of the brace is in great condition, Hinge is smooth, velcro still works perfectly. This is probably from all the abrasive sand use. If I just used this brace with shoes I'm sure it would even last longer. Lots of other braces I have tried last less than six months before they start to fail with my amount of play. This brace also works well for running, mountain biking, and hiking. I cannot think of any sport this wouldn't work well for. I wash my braces weekly either by hand or if I machine wash, I put them in a mesh bag to keep the velcro from damaging other clothes. After several severe ligament tears in both ankles and years of physical therapy, this brace gives me protection so I can relax and enjoy the game with a reduced chance of injury.
Here are some other braces I have also liked that each have there own pros and cons are Active Ankle AS1 pro, DONJOY Performance Bionic Ankle Brace, DONJOY Performance POD, DeRoyal Sports Orthosis Powered by The Boa, BioSkin TriLok Ankle Brace, and BioSkin AFTR DC Ankle Brace. Zamst A2-DX is my favorite for consistent performance, durability and comfort.

I severely dangle broke my left lower leg both fibula an tibia down through the joint along with a 100% dislocation of the ankle and a tear of the lower ligament between the two bones, when it happened I had to reach down and turn my Left sneaker toes from 7 o'clock to 12, it was as gruesome an injury as you can have, made Dak Prescott's injury look mild by comparison. So 6 hour surgery, 13 pieces of titanium and 8 weeks later I'm making a sharp recovery, my bones are healing very fast except for the fibula(always slow apparently), my doc now has me putting 100% weight on it and it's quite frightening, He gave me an air cast splint but I have no confidence in it, I bought this brace because it looked well thought out and had good reviews, well it did not disappoint, I'm wearing it and I'm walking without even a limp, I'm still slightly nervous but nothing compared to what I was, this is a great confidence inspiring ankle brace! If there is one complaint it's that it's a little bulky to fit in some shoes, just lace them looser, can't recommend this brace enough
Comfort meets protection

These braces are the best I have worn to date. I played basketball through high school and college with a few different braces and settled on the traditional lace up brace for the duration of my playing days. Due to some problems with my Achilles I started to find the lace up style too stiff and rigid which led me to seek out a new brace. I tried the A2-DX starting late last year and immediately fell in love. The comfort of the brace is a huge upgrade over what I have used in the past and the support and protection seems to be just as good if not better. I will admit that getting them on and adjusted occasionally takes a little longer than the old braces, but nothing that is a big deal. I am not sure what the longevity of these braces will be, but in the 4 months I have been using them they show very little wear. I would highly recommend these braces to anyone looking for a great mix of comfort and protection.
Tried 5 braces - this one is top 1

I've purchased 5 different ankle braces and will post this same review for each one.
I was looking for ankle brace the would give the most lateral support.
I've injured both my ankles while playing ultimate Frisbee. I love the game and will continue playing no matter what.
Wearing support is now a must for me otherwise I easily roll my ankle on a sharp turn or at a stop during the game.
So again, my intent is to use ankle support for already injured ankle while playing active sports.
Brace that only helps to "prevent" injury is useless, I'm already injured.
Here is my list.
1. Best support and price
#1 Laced Ankle Brace With Stabilizing Strap For Flexible Support. Breathable Neoprene Braces Made By Product Stop. (Large)
Plastic on both sides makes all the difference. I can tighten it with the straps as tight as I want. Foot stays flexible. I've played Frisbee at full strength and didn't have any pain from my injured right ankle.
2. Best support as well, but expensive
Zamst A2-DX Left Ankle Brace, Black, Large
When I read in one of negative reviews for this product that it is too complicated to put on, that was a selling point for me.
Brace that is easy to put on cannot give good support. A good brace would mold into your foot, it shouldn't be easy to put it on.
So I got it, played at full speed and it was most of the time very safe.
The only thing I didn't like is that material of the boot and the straps can stretch, that's what makes it quite flexible. But that also means there is no hard stop there, it may let the ankle roll in some really extreme twist. I guess they could improve design by adding non-stretching strap on top of the stretching one. But that may make everything bulky.
3. These 3 braces have the same design, good basic support, but not good for ultimate game
ASO Ankle Stabilizer, Black, X-Large
Best price, design and durability
McDavid 195 Deluxe Ankle Brace with Strap (Black, Large)
More expensive than ASO, nicer look, good durability, but I don't like design of the straps (crossing straps should start from the back of the foot)
Shock Doctor Ultra Wrap Lace Ankle Support (Black, Large,9-9.5)
Price is OK, but not very durable. 7-10 games destroyed it quickly.
UPDATE 10/18/2017
After 1 year of extensive use I'd rank Zamst A2-DX as #1 for its' outstanding durability.
#1 Laced Ankle Brace With Stabilizing Strap For Flexible Support. Breathable Neoprene Braces Made By Product Stop. (Large) teared apart after 2-3 month of active use (3-4 games a week). Zamst, however, is still in a very good condition.

Excellent brace for basketball players!!!!

Excellent product!!! My son started this season with two bad ankle rolls, after a trip to the Dr who cleared him to play but recommended he wear a "good" brace for support, I purchased this brace particularly because of its ratings. I have to say, I've had two college basketball athletes and now my son is a high school baller, I've seen my share of braces, NEVER have any of my kids been able to play with a healing rolled ankle, once my guy put the brace on, although he said it was initially a little uncomfortable, he had a game that evening and he was explosive!!!! Scored 24 pts., 12 assist and 10 rebounds!!! His stats are usually up there but for him to come right out of the rolled ankle three days prior, he's never done that! My son has always had issues with his ankles, since wearing the braces, he's had absolutely no issue at all, he thanks me all the time for finding this brace!!
