I bought this to keep my garbage hound of a dachshund out of the trash. He can stand up and activate the lid with his nose, but the raised apparatus is too high for him to reach anything unless we get careless with paper products that stick up easily.
The motion sensor is annoying. It seems to have half a mind of it's own. It opens if we're too close when walking by, and takes multiple frantic waves when you seem to have something really drippy that you need to get rid of. You also have to be really really precise with your fingers when you try to lock the lid, because the sensor is right next to it and the lid will keep popping open if you don't slide in there like a ninja. The lid will close on you if you take too long to dump something like a high chair tray, so you have to push the manual button to open it and then push the manual button to close it when you're done.

UPDATE TO 5*. I originally would have given this a 5* review, had it not stopped working suddenly, out of the blue about 2 weeks ago. I have only been using the product since the first of March so in less than 4 months, a very expensive trash can now does not work properly. I have no idea why but suddenly now when I wave my hand in front of the sensor, it makes a clicking sound and doesn't open - either by itself or with me manually pushing the open button. And no, it's not the batteries - I already replaced them to see if that was the problem. I love the fact it has the pet restricted lid. But sometimes it's a little too sensitive when I'm standing in front of it and it will try to pop back open as I'm trying to wait for it to automatically close. But I thought it was very sturdy, and my little fur baby could not open it (unless I forgot to close the latch) and that was my main concern!! If the manufacturer can give me an idea what's wrong with it and help to fix it, I would definitely consider recommending it to others to buy.

Update: I received a message a message from the seller who offered to replace the lid. They sent it out very quickly and I've been very happy ever since!! I certainly would buy from someone who fixes their product.

I've had this trash can for about 7 years and it works like new. It works every time. Not one malfunction in 7 years. Replaced battery's 3 times. Friends and family love it.

I bought this because I was fooled by the "Pet-Proof" phrasing. It's not pet proof in the sense I was looking for. There's a little blocker that slides over on top of the lid so if a pet sets the sensor off, it won't actually open the lid. With that being said, prior to purchasing this the dogs kept getting into the plastic trash can at night. The taller dog would knock it over and the smaller one would feast on the trash (yes, I feed my pets). I invested in this hoping the weight of it would deter them from knocking it over. Since I've had this a few months now, they have not tried to tip it over. The taller dog is a bit of a doofus so he's scared of the motion lid sound. He hasn't figured out if he moves his nose over the sensor he can open it and knock it over. I would say depending on the dog and how skittish they are, it may work great. If your dog is pretty ballsy, it won't fix the issue. As a human, I do like the motion sensor part of it. When I'm cooking with raw meat it's easier to throw the scraps away without touching the lid. I also like that I can set the lid to Open and I can peel vegetables above the trash can without having to motion for it to open every 5 seconds. Overall I do love it but I still can't believe I spend that much money on a frickin trash can.

Prevents my mischievous 1 year old from going through the trash. Exactly what I wanted.

I only wish it was bigger. But it's perfect other than that.
