Great Guitar!

I bought this guitar a couple of weeks ago and have been messing around with it for a little while so thought I would pass along my review. I am a luthier and have been building guitars for about 12 years. I own probably 30 different acoustics, Taylor, Breedlove, Martin and a few others. I have a Oscar Schmidt "Delta King" electric hollowbody ( great guitar as well! ) so I am familiar with the brand. I bought this guitar because I wanted something to keep in my shop to mess around with and take on the road visiting family and not worry about bringing a high end guitar. I had read all the reviews and was intrigued as to what you can get for $150. I have to say that I am very impressed with what I received. The build quality of this guitar is first rate, very well built and very tight. The spalted top is beautiful! Mine has a bit of flame maple and it is stunning. The neck is finished nicely and no sharp frets. I was surprised at how nice the no name tuners are. I was planning on having to change them but they are decent quality and hold tune very well so for now they will stay on. Time will tell. Right out of the box the set up was pretty decent and can be played by beginners. However, I have my own specs so I adjusted the neck relief to .005". The bridge saddle and neck nut are called nu-bone but basically plastic so I changed both nut and saddle to bone ( available here on amazon for about $12 ). I also installed new Elixcir Nano Web medium strings. The guitar comes with D'Addarios which is a nice set of strings. I also polished the frets and lemon oiled the fret board. With these minor changes the guitar now sounds wonderful! Don't get me wrong, right out of the box the guitar sounded nice and full, has great projection as is. I just wanted to see if it could be improved and it took to those minor mods and I believe sounds even better than original. In my opinion if you are a beginner or even an experienced player you will be pleasantly surprised how nice this guitar actually is. For about $150 there is no better guitar out there in this price range that has this kind of quality, and a nice full sounding tone. My understanding is that each spalted top is unique and no two are the same. My brother, who will only play his Martin, saw this and could not believe how nice it looks and sounds, when I told him what I paid he did not believe me.
This is such a nice guitar I'm thinking of purchasing maybe another 2 and setting them up with different tunings!
Great guitar for a BEGINNER.

I just purchased this guitar and it is great. First let me say that I am a beginner. So what does a beginner like me want: cheap, durable, functional, and attractive. In any new hobbies that I have started I never go out and buy the most expensive tool I can find. I always buy a good solid starting tool that I won't cry over if I break. That is what this guitar is. If you are a beginner and you are looking for a well built guitar that sounds good, looks good, and you won't cry if you brake it because you don't know what you are doing yet, this is great. If you are some pedantic person that has been playing for a long time and care about things that us beginners don't know or even care that exists at this point in our learning adventure, then don't be a cheap and go buy the correct tool for your skill level. I write my comment this way because of the person that gave this guitar a one star. Obviously you are at a point that you need a more advanced guitar.

As far as how its shipped, it came well packaged, no dings of damage, not sure if it was tuned, frankly I did not care I bought an electric tuner and they are super simple to use.

Fine value for a cheap guitar

First off I ordered this because of the price to review. I was a little nervous because the guitar kind of has the look of a toy/cheap guitar but I was pleasantly surprised. My guitar has pretty nice tone right out of the box (after tuning of course). The action is a little high but definitely not as high as other guitars I've had. The frets looked alright to me and I didn't see any cracks or scratches. I was a little nervous because it was shipped very tight in a box with no padding but it seemed to have made it through. The maple is real nice and definitely grows on you. I was slightly disappointed because mine seems to have less interesting marks than other people's pictures. The inlay around the edge is slightly tacky imho but I can live with it. Overall it is really a looker, although I'll caution about one thing look wise. The main picture has a nice dark burgundy pick guard which looks real nice, but mine came with a hideous red one. I will be removing it asap because it really ruins the look of the guitar imho. They should have matched the darkness/ color of the back but instead they throw on this terrible cheap ugly one. Also I'll mention the pick guard wasn't 100% tight to the guitar. It came up slightly on a small part of the edge. Other than the the guitar has a good look and great sound for the price point. Of course it isn't as good as higher end guitars but this is a great guitar to get started.

I received the og2sm-r today. Upon unpacking I noticed that the neck had a crack about 1 1/2 in. long behind the nut towards the body. This is not the guitars fault, but the fault of rough handling along the way. I called Amazon, and the support said that I would have another one by Thursday of this week. The guitar itself - I am impressed with it. The first thing I noticed was the light weight while unpacking. After calling Amazon I thought I would like to hear what it sounds like, so I tuned it up to pitch and thought it sounded pretty good, with a lot of resonance and sustain. It had lots of volume and it did not sound like a laminate guitar, so I put it on the bench and put an inspection mirror inside to see if the grain pattern from underneath matched the top; and as near as I can tell it looks to be a solid top, and sure sounds like it is. While looking inside I noticed that the bridge plate was rosewood or a similar species. I gave the truss rod a little adjustment which turned smoothly and lowered the action. Checked the intonation and it was on, Harmonics rings out at the 12th, 7th, 5th and 4th frets. The top has the tiger maple strips and it is book matched. I'm considering keeping this one and curious to see what the next one is like. I've been playing guitar for 57 years and repairing guitars for 20 years; not to imply that I'm a pro, but not a novice either. Longevity will probably tell the tale. God bless and hope you have good fortune with yours.
Looks beautiful and sound great

I saw an Oscar Schmidt spalted maple in a store once and loved the look. As I was looking for an inexpensive 'beater' I came across this and ordered. It arrived well before promised and the original box was in another box with enough padding to survive an airdrop.

On opening I saw that it was in perfect condition and still smelled of wood and lacquer. The pattern on the wood is quite nice. After using I was impressed with the rich tone, especially on the bass notes.

I do find the action a bit high for my tastes, and the neck seems a bit wide. The first I can correct and the second I can adapt to. Well, maybe as these 64 year old hands don't stretch that much. The width does allow for easier fingerpicking though. I was happy that after a few days of getting used to my environment it holds a tune pretty well and only needs minor tweekings.

Overall, I would highly recommend this for a beginner to intermediate player, or as a beater for one who doesn't want to take their more expensive instruments outside, or to the beach.

Update- I lowered the action and replaced the strings with Ernie Ball Silk and Steel 11's. it is much more playable.
