If you plug the USB into the right hand side it will throw an error stating it can't be used and needs 3.0 or higher. Using the left hand USB works perfectly. After powering up and plugging in make sure to go to
settings>>>devices>>>>USB storage devices>>>>Element 25A2>>>then select "Use this extended storage"

I had to reformat it as the PS4 did not automatically recognize it, and the instructions to do so seemed vague and out of date. Figured it out soon enough, though, and it was a quick process. Had to delete and then restart the download process to make it use the extra storage instead of the PS4 itself. But once it was all set up, everything is now running smoothly in and out of game.
