Thanks to all the reviews that mentioned issues with the solid spacers. With that info I looked around my basement for anything that would offer resistance and found a roll of black neoprene tape. One rotation around my handlebars, tighten down the hex bolt and that thing seems solid. Attached my favorite bottle holder and I'm all set. Easy to grab and much safer than reaching down while I'm riding.
This thing is all metal, very solid. If you don't use the included spacers there is no plastic to wear or break.
Ratings: out of the box 4 stars, once modified and installed, 5 stars.
Update: Turns out one rotation of tape is not enough, two or three times around the handlebars will give a much firmer grip.

It is so rare when something exceeds our expectations in life. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this mounting bracket for a water bottle cage is. It is cleverly designed, well engineered, well made and reasonable priced. What more can you ask for? I mounted this on my handlebars quickly with no issues. They even include the Allen wrenches. It is not flimsy. It does not slip or slide. The clamp holds its position while holdning a large full water bottle even over bumps. I'm going to get two more for my other bike and for my wife's bike. I couldn't be more pleased. It is an excellent product. I've read that some people managed to break theirs. But they also overloaded it. If you stick to one water bottle you will have no issues.

This was exactly what I needed! The bracket did tend to "slip" over rough terrain, so I took the advice of another reviewer, and cut a piece from an old bike tibe to make a gasket. Cut the tube to fit the width of the bracket and long enough to wrap around the bike tube. Perfect!! The bracket is solid, and does not move at all!! (I will use the bike tire tube for gaskets in the future!).
My bottle cage mounted perfectly to the bracket and works perfectly. I am pleased with this purchase and recommend it to others who need a mount with flexible placement options.

I got this for my wife who fell trying to reach for, or return, her water bottle to the frame mount. $1000's of dollars later, this mount may extend her riding career. After seeing how intuitive it is to access a water bottle on the handlebars I am getting one for myself. So it is a great idea for any novice bicycle riders but sensible for any cyclist.
