We have been using the ConTech version of the scarecrow for a very long time(10 seasons?). We are protecting a vegetable garden with an area about 20' x 30', that is not fenced. The garden is about 50' away from a creek that is a major biotic corridor. We have been using 2 units aimed differently. This spring one of our units went dead. We replaced it with one of the current versions produced by Ortho. Quite a disappointment on performance. We have not been able to get the sensitivity set to a point where it will reliably trigger the spray. Also quite a disappointment on price.
We thought we would try one these Hoont units as the price was very attractive. It also seems to look a lot like the Scarecrow units. So far it is working great. The sensitivity is about what we remember from the old ConTech units. The sprinkler on top is a great improvement. It makes a lot of noise and shoots a solid stream of water as opposed to a spray.
Ours is permanently mounted on a pipe that is about 30 inches above ground, we do not use the stomp down hose part. At this level it triggers on both deer and turkeys. It is very convenient that the plumbing on the bottom of the main housing is 3/4 inch NPT.
We still have not decided whether we like the AA batteries on this versus the 9V on the other units. The battery cover on the Hoont unit requires a screwdriver to get into. Hoont says it is good for 7600 triggers, if that turns out to be true it might not be that much of an issue. The other issue is that the unit is not locked from swiveling on the mount. So we are re aiming it every day.
I would say for the price, well worth trying.

This product was easy to assemble and put in operation. It appears to be of good quality and well engineered. We will see if it works as I intend it to and scares off the Mallard Ducks that come back every year desecrate our pool! My only concern is that it only sprays water for 5 seconds. Checking the instructions, it is not adjustable, which is negative. For our duck visitors that may not be enough time. The standard sprinkler that is easy to adjust swath and distance.

Works great, sometimes to good, mailman/people walking on sidewalk set it off. I had to adjust it so that it won't spray as far to keep them from getting wet. Keeps the stray cats out of the yard, Love it.
